Bummer about Ray Manzerek, huh?...he was great.
The article said he was 74...wasn't he in his late 20's when
the Doors got started?...whatever, he was a huge part of
that band...and if ya think about, the one who kept the
legacy of the band alive...they were huge in the early 80's
at my high school...that book had come out...and Ray was the
one who kept the dopey "Jim Isn't Dead" shtick going...
Good for him.....seemed like a cool guy....produced the 1st
X album...not much else, but his 5 years in the Doors made him a legend.
SPEAKING of legends...peeped the annual summer beer from Sierra
Nevada and decided to pop one in Rays honour...a rare monday Tasting Notes
post...AND it's amazingly beautiful in San Francisco today...lets do this.
I had this last year and remembered liking it....no dubious fruit/spice
distractions that plague a lesser brewerys summer selections.....nah...
the folks up in Chico can brew.
This IS a lager afterall...lightly spiced malt note on the nose...clean...
a VERY refreshing bit of suds here...ya see, in lesser hands, a "lager"
doesn't mean much...Coors...Budweiser...these fools lost the plot
YEARS ago...see, THIS is G'damn lager...same with the new release
from Anchor Brewing....THATS how you do a Lager...it's sorta
become a meaningless sud....takes skills to pull it off....like this here...
I respect the 5.0% Alc.vol too...JUST right for this type of beer....
Dig...think about the cat who posts here from San Diego....he's out
scrubbing
the sidewalk with a MF'in toothbrush during a manic dumb-dust fueled
episode,
those 9.4% IPA's just wear home-slice the fuck out...then he posts here all
MF'in night...mostly gibberish...
This tasting notes post shit is for THAT kinda kid...
A public service, if ya would.

So I put any tiny remaining scrap of RMGD cred I have on the line and I confess that I picked some Third Shift Lager on a whim and, of course, on sale. I sorta kinda thought it might be a MillCoors product from those ads on TV that I don't pay much attention to, but the packaging says not one word about who really produces it. Well, I gotta tell you that it ain't terrible. It is a respectable marzen given that it comes from Big Beer. It's not my new favorite beer, but I wouldn't have to gag it down if someone offered me one, like I would with most of the mass produced swill that I feel obliged to drink just to be polite.

When Anheiser Busch owned Sea World, they had a tasting room and you
could get 3 tastes I think. They had some good Porters, Stouts, etc. I
think they are able to brew good beer, they just choose to brew swill.

Picked up a 12-pack of this last weekend. I think it's noticeably
better than last year. It was really flavorless last year, but has a
nice Kolsch-y hops aroma/flavor going on. Palpable richness to it.
It is a little low in alcohol content for my tastes, but WTF, Pilsner
Urquell is one of the finest quaffs on the planet, and it clocks in at
4.7% so I'll deal.

BTW, the Crazy Stick arrived tonight. Nice touch sending it in an MMJ
prescription box. I'm transferring the files tonight, will be
verifying and re-offering within a day. VERY nice, sweets.

Peace,
Neil X.

Budweiser's brewers are some of the most talented brewers in the
world. Such a waste.

The only thing I remember from my one visit to Sea World during the AB ownership is hanging out in the Clydesdale barn. But then that is where they get Bud Light, right?

It's over-hopped.

For some reason the vast majority of American micro brewers that
actually try to do lagers over-hop and push it to the verge of, and too
often past the verge of a soapy taste and nose, like they failed to
rinse the brewing and bottling equipment after they washed it.

They need to spend the last week of September in Munich so they
experience how a good lager should really taste. There would be many
fine examples readily available.

Are you saying that an American, particularly west coast, craft/micro brewer, would go all hops crazy? I am shocked, just shocked to read that!

Unfortunately they know their market and their market is mainly people who like, as Jeff puts it, "hops centric" brews. Malt, after all, is only there to obtain high ABV.
