Today I was thinking how cool it would be to have a drum competition... just
on a simple drum kit.. or maybe a large kit... man there would be some
incredible display's of hidden talent... At the 69 Woodstock... ( the only
Woodstock ) the drummer from Santana would have taken home the gold.... then
of course there could be have to be competition on guitar, and of course
bass.. maybe congas.....

I remember my Dad telling me of a concert he saw in the 40s (or 50s)
called Battle of the Drummers with Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa. Now that
would've been a drum-off!

There is a movie starring Barbara Stanwyck (I can't remember the name of it
but I think that Cary Grant was in it too) that featured a scene with Gene
Krupa and he does a drum solo where he ends up playing on a box of wooden
matches. I don't remember anything else about the movie, but I do remember
Krupas drum solo. He was amazing

What is even more amazing is watching Krupa and Rich playin on such
small drum kits. Maybe 7 pieces in total and that includes the stool
:) Same goes for John Bonham and his small kit. Guess if you are good
enough you don't need 3 bass drums and 9 crash
cymbals--------cough-------Tommy Lee-------cough.
I'll look for that Stanwyck film. Sounds cool.

PS> I bought a cd over the summer on Verve called "Krupa and Rich". It
is a remastered version of a studio session they did in NYC in 55.
What makes it even more mindblowing is that Roy Eldridge and Dizzy
Gillespie are on trumpet, Illionios Jacquet and Flip Phillips are on
tenor sax and backed by the Oscar Peterson rythym section which
consists of Oscar on piano, Herb Ellis and Freddie Green on guitar and
Ray Brown on bass. Brilliant stuff when everyone is kickin it and when
Krupa and Rich square off alone. Check it out.
