U.S. to require trans fat on labels
FDA moves on rules after report finds no safe level in food
ASSOCIATED PRESS
WASHINGTON, July 10 — The government is moving to require the listing of
artery-clogging trans fat on food labels after a report from the Institute
of Medicine found there is no safe level in people’s diets. Eating some
trans fat may be unavoidable, but people should reduce their intake as much
as possible to lower the chance of heart disease, the Institute, a branch of
the National Academy of Sciences, said Wednesday.

Well, with BushCo's daily atrocities, that shouldn't be too difficult.
In any case, Transfat isn't the only poison consumed by America. And, now
that Monsanto Chemical Company is a major producer of food eaten by
Americans, I'm sure that the wholesale poisoning of Americans will
continue to be profitable for years to come.

I can't disagree. I stopped eating trans-fat (not fat mind you :-) over 10
years ago. Admittedly, sometimes on one of those long highway trips, I have
been known to hit a Carls Jr.

You're deceiving yourself, unless you only eat organic food, or food
you've personally grown. Transfat seems to make its way into most
processed foods. Just look at any label for any food in your
cupboard, and if it shows "hydrogenated vegetable oil," you're ingesting
transfat.
Years ago, I read that if you eat food from an American supermarket, as we
all do who live in the US, you'll get more salt than your body could ever
possibly need. I stopped using salt the instant I read that, but I'd be a
fool to think I was on a salt-free diet. I went for pizza last night, and
I know there's salt in the pizza dough, salt in the cheese, salt in the
tomato sauce.
After reading "Botany of Desire," I'm thinking more and more about forking
over the extra money for organic foods. The amount of chemicals and
transfat and salt in processed foods is horrifying.
We all have hundreds of different chemicals in our bodies, ingested in our
food.
Sad to say, I think the best any of us can do is _try_ to avoid eating
poison food, but in the US, that's next to impossible...unless all you eat
is organic.
And, I don't. Not yet. Then again, it's been decades since I've eaten
what's referred to generally as "fast food." I don't drink soda. And,
physically, at age 56, I'm in the best shape I've ever been in. When last
I weighed myself, I was 125 lbs.
As we're finding out, the more you weigh, the less time you have on this
beautiful planet of ours.

Mainly I eat rice, vegetables (mostly spinach), limited meat, nuts, and
fruit....all organic. I do eat cheese on occasion.

Seriously Joe, I'm the food label king. Come over to my pad and look in my
kitchen man. Not a trace of trans-fat.

Check out the latest consumer reports about irradiated food; the
problem is more than simply a Republican or Democratic problem, it is
our rush to use technology without enough study, driven by the bottom
line.
For example, there is the push to use more and more irradiation, (much
of our food is already irradiated and has been since the 80's such as
flours and spices), but there seems to be potential health risks with
irradiating certain foods.
And it appears that the irradiation doesn't kill all the bacteria,
while changing the taste of the meat for the worse:
"Our trained taste testers noted a slight but distinct off taste and
smell..in irradiated beef and chicken....likening it to singed hair.
In the beef, the taste was detectable even with a bun ketchup and
lettuce."
Seems some of the proteins get over-cooked along with the bacteria.
