In celebration of Katemas, I went and saw Marina play last night at the the
Boston Garden. That's right, she's now an arena act! Okay, well, not
really. She was opening for Coldplay, but, if you ask me, she completely
upstaged Coldplay.

Well, maybe the rest of the audience didn't feel that way, and maybe they
thought I was a complete freak for screaming Marina at the top of my lungs
after every song, like a teenage girl at a Beatles concert. But that's how
I felt about those Coldplay freaks when they were screaming later at the
top of their lungs. At least I had a good reason to be screaming! The
Coldplay fans *did* show a great deal of appreciation for Marina, so
hopefully she'll get some new fans.

Boy, were Coldplay *BORING*, though*.* Well, musically that is. They did
put on quite a theatrical spectacle for a few of the songs, and I think
they used up more confetti than was used at the opening ceremony for the
Olympics.

In any case, back to Marina. She's ready to be a super-star. She already
knows how to fill up an entire arena with only her own presence and how to
work an audience of thousands and thousands of people! Marina has
definitely acquired the talent of sucking up to the audience down pat. She
kept telling us what a great audience Boston is, and how much she loves
playing Boston. It was actually quite charming, though, and it went over
well. The Coldplay audience seemed to like her a lot. (If Marina loves
playing Boston so much, how come she's not playing Boston on her solo
tour?!?!?!? Well, that's okay, as I'm going to see her three more times in
clubs in a few weeks. Twice in NYC and once in Philly.)

Marina's voice was in top form too, which was nice, as she recently hurt
her vocal cords. They seem to have mostly healed, however.

Alas, didn't get to meet Marina. I waited and waited but Marina never
showed. She's famous for meeting her fans after shows, like Tori back in
the day, but perhaps that doesn't always apply when the vast majority of
the fans are Coldplay fans.

The setlist: Bubblegum Bitch, Lies, I Am Not a Robot, Primadonna,
Hollywood, Hypocrates, Radioactive, How to Be a Heartbreaker.

As an extra added bonus, Emeli Sande did a short set before Marina. I had
to feel a bit bad for her, as she was playing to a largely empty stadium.
I'm not so familiar with her material, but she was good. I'll have to check
her out.

P.S. To get you all addicted to Marina, I've made you all a Katemas
present. Marina is really a goth trapped in the body of a pop star, so I've
made a "mix-tape" of some of Marina's pop-gothiest songs. I call the
mix-tape, "Pop Your Bubblegum Heart". Here's a link to it:

Please don't share this link outside of this group, lest the Soup Nazis

Ha ha, screaming like a teenage girl! Did you get that on video? Sounds like you had a great time, and thanks for the mix-tape. -Karen

I like this a lot, thanks |>oug.

I was reminded of a goth-pop combination of P.J. Harvey, Happy Rhodes
and even Milla Jovovich....

But as i've mentioned here previously, i feel about Florence & The
Machine the way you feel about Marina, and at my age i can't easily take
on another addiction. Good stuff nonetheless.

You're welcome!

Did I get me screaming on video? Alas, no. I did take a 30-second clip of
each song, but I was a zillion miles away, so Marina is just a little dot.
There's a photo I took of that here. Scroll down to the concert photo:

Mowgli's Road <http://mowglis-road.gaffa.org/>

I'm going to three more gigs at small venues, so hopefully I'll be able to
get better clips. The mind boggles at all the screaming I'm likely to do
when standing five feet away from Marina (though I suppose my girlfriend
might keep me in check). Fortunately, any embarrassment I might make of
myself will go completely unnoticed in these venues as Marina's fans are by
far the most rabid fans I've ever seen in my entire life. Well, maybe not
quite in the Beatlemania hysteria way, but rather with everyone shouting,
"We love you, Marina!" continuously, etc. When I saw her a year ago, the
audience singing along to *EVERY* song was so loud, it threatened to drown
out the band at times, which was playing at typical "make your ears bleed"
club levels of loudness.

Here are some photos I took when I saw her at that gig:

And here are a couple of 30 second video clips of that show:

You left out Lene Lovich!

I've been telling all my friends that Marina is a goth trapped in the body
of a pop star, and then Marina recently came out and said that she
envisioned Electra Heart (which is the name of the both her new album and
the character embodied by the concept album) as the goth Britney Spears.

Well, I'm not so keen on Britney, but if that's what the goth Britney would
make, then I'm all in!

She's also said that she got the pop thing out of her system and for her
next album wants to do something different. Since she's been saying lately
how much she respects PJ, I'm hoping that her next album will be a more
punky album. That would be awesome, since Marina has shown that she can
make brilliant punk songs, even if she doesn't do it very often. (The
punkiest of the songs that I put on the mix tape are not on any album. They
are just stuff that either she used to have on MySpace a long time ago, or
personal demos that ended up being leaked.)

Sure you can! There's nothing better for getting you out of bed in the
morning and adding some spring to your step like a good obsession. Besides,
being obsessed with Marina is clearly better since she's still playing
clubs. And you still have time to catch her on this tour if you are quick
about it! For Florence, the days of playing clubs are long gone.
