Was it difficult to print music in older days?

It is commonly said that "broadsides" gave the words only because "everybody knew the tunes". But is this so. Technology existed for printing alphabetic letters, but is it not much harder to print music in staff notation? Not the kind of thing an ordinary printer would be able to do?

Mine is Sarah McLachlan who will release a new pop CD
in 2012 and tour it (I hope) in summer 2012. But I
hope she can be persuaded to do a folk CD as a side
project after that. (She has collaborated with
