Legendary American singer/songwriter Don McLean, best known for his 1971
folk anthem American Pie and hits such as Vincent (Starry Starry Night),
Crying, Since I Don’t Have You, Castles in the Sand and more, will be
one of the headline acts at the 2008 Northern Lights Festival Boreal.
Advanced weekend passes for the 37th annual festival, which will take
place July 4, 5, 6 in Bell Park, go on sale today (Tuesday, April 15).
NLFB artistic director Paul Loewenberg also announced today Daniel
Bélanger has been signed to be another main stage headliner. Bélanger
recently won a JUNO for Francophone Album of the Year for his release
L'echec du materiel. Bélanger is considered one of the best Québécois
songwriters and singers to emerge in the past 15 years. His music is
eclectic, inspired by alternative rock, folk and electronic music.
For the family audience, Sharon and Bram will bring their cavalcade of
children's hits to the Family area in two appearances over the weekend.
Sharon, Lois and Bram (Lois Lilenstein retired from full time touring in
2000) have created some of the most beloved family entertainment that
Canada has known.
The Sadies, a Toronto foursome that transforms 1960s country rock and
psychedelia, C&W, surf, punk and cosmic American music into their own
unique sound, will also headline an evening at the festival.
Loewenberg said, "Don McLean smashed attendance records at Mariposa and
Calgary Folk Fest in 2007. At a time when war and economy is so much on
people's minds, this is a perfect year to have the author of one of the
great tomes of modern culture. He added, "It is a distinct honour for
NLFB to be the first to promote a concert of Daniel's in Sudbury since
he has become so incredibly popular."
Add 35 more incredible folk, indie rock, traditional, bluegrass and
world music artists to the roster, and the organizers of the 2008 NLFB
feel this is the strongest festival yet. At a mere $60 for a weekend
pass (three days and nights of incredible music and performance),
tickets will go fast as they are less expensive than all other major
Ontario music festivals.
Tickets for the festival are on sale through www.nlfbsudbury.com.
