I just got back from the first pub gig by very young
Newfoundland traditional band The Freels and I (and
the crowd) was highly impressed. They are almost
as good as The Dardanelles and they are just starting
out. There is a YouTube video of The Freels at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYaZq4-yzGU&feature=youtube
but with capable sound tech Rob Brown they were even
better live

Here is the blurb on them from nlfolk.com :

"Freel good music, if you will.... The Freels. Comprised of four young
musicians from the St. John's area, the group makes use of tight
harmonies and solid rhythms to bring energy and life into their
performances. The dynamic balance of passionate ballads and fiery dance
tunes offered by The Freels promises a show that is not to be missed.
Members of The Freels include: Anthony Chafe (guitar, accordion,
vocals), Maria Peddle (fiddle, vocals), Danny Mills (flute, bouzouki,
vocals), and Andrew Fitzgerald (fiddle, bodhran, vocals)."

Note also that the Newfoundland & Labrador Folk Festival
lineup will be released tomorrow (Thursday) and should be
on the web site http://www.nlfolk.com fairly quickly
plus I will post a note about it to rec.music.celtic and
rec.music.folk fairly soon.
