Vance Gilbert, Barbara Kessler, Ellis Paul and Kathy Phipps to Perform
Concert to Benefit Homeless

May 14, 1992: Boston- Award-winning folk artists Vance Gilbert, Barbara
Kessler, Ellis Paul and Kathy Phipps will share the stage on Friday, June 5,
1992 in a concert to benefit the Mass. Coalition for the Homeless. Homefolks
III, sponsored by the Hunger Housing Action Group, an informal volunteer
committee, is an annual benefit concert for the Mass. Coalition.

The Paulist Center, a Catholic church at the foot of Beacon Hill, will provide
the setting for Homefolks III. The show begins at 8.00 pm at the Paulist
Center, 5 Park Street, across from Boston Common. Tickets are $8.00 ahead of
time, $10.00 on the day of the show. Tickets are available at the Paulist
Center Bookstore. Show information is available by calling 617.825-1184.

Vance Gilbert, 1991 winner of the Great Woods Folk FestivalÕs New Performers
Competition, brings a rich tonal quality and distinctive phrasing to his
singing. But what music critics seem to write about most is the material
itself. From the story of a black truck driver dealing with unspoken racism in
the disquieting That Good Cup of Coffee to the torchy exuberance of When Jimmy
Falls in Love, Gilbert brings some much-needed soulfulness to the world of
contemporary folk. His debut tape, Face to Face, was released in 1991.

Barbara Kessler, a relative newcomer to the folk scene, is already creating a
stir, from her first award as one of three winners of the 1989 New England
Festival of Folk MusicÕs New Faces in Folk competition. Her versatile, clear
and expressive voice has been described as Òheartstoppingly beautifulÓ (Roaring
Brook Concerts). Her songs are musings that invite the listener to explore a
familiar lansdscape to discover glimmers of truth obscured by the ordinary.

Ellis Paul, who appears on Windham HillÕs Legacy II album, won the 1991
Underground Acoustic Competition in Boston. His songs create pictures of
different corners of American life, from hard city streets to images seen from
the average personÕs front porch steps. With lyrics that are sparse, lean
and decidedly unsentimental, he moves his listeners with heartfelt vocals, by
turns melancholy and upbeat. He is currently at work on his first solo album
project, set for release in autumn 1992.

Kathy Phipps started her professional career in 1989, playing in local pubs,
and is now enjoying a wider exposure on the regional music scene. She placed
third in the 1991 Underground Acoustic Competition, from a field of 220
performers. Her lyrics tell universal stories through her own experience,
including that of the loss of her brother, who died from AIDS. She has a
natural stage presence: a certain innocence, wistfulness and honesty mix
together in her singing.

Homefolks III is the third annual concert sponsored by the Hunger Housing
Action Group. Past performers include Bob Franke, Greg Greenway and Barb
Schloff.

The Paulist Center is a vibrant faith community of believers who come from
all over the greater Boston area for worship, growth and social activism. One
of its social action groups is the Hunger Housing Action Group. This Group is
made up of young adults who seek to alleviate the problems of local hunger and
homelessness through prayer, study, volunteer service and financial assistance.
The annual Homefolks concerts are a part of this long-standing tradition.
