The new "V" is on in my area starting in 5 minutes... it may be good, it
may be horrible.

I'm pre-minded of a 1997 song with V in the lyrics:

The most interesting thing about the relaunch of "V", to my mind, is that
it's clearly an artifact of the "Hey, we took an old cheesy show
(Battlestar Galactica), made it dark and gritty, and it was a smash it.
Let's do it again!"

Which of course, leads one (well, me at least), to play the game: What
cheesy old show will they *next* make a dark, gritty remake of.

My top five so far, in no particular order:

1. Manimal
2. Automan
3. Alien Nation
4. The Greatest American Hero
5. Voyagers!

(Most of the fun of this game is just imagining how wildly awful the "dark
and gritty" versions of these shows would be *grin*)

Well, Manimal would probably just look like a Wolverine ripoff.

Never heard of Automan but from the Internet Movie data base listing,
the basic premise would make it hard to distinguish from remakes of any
of a number of other shows.

Alien Nation was actually a pretty good show as is; I'd say a dark
version would look like District 9 (leastwise if the movie matched the
advertising - I didn't see it).

The "cheese" made up most of the fun with Greatest American Hero - just
wouldn't be the same without weird and silly new powers popping up from
time to time or Our Heroes arguing noisily when sneaking up on things
or... It'd just be one more superhero show.

And I never saw Voyagers but from the sound of it (IMdb again) you might
have trouble telling the result from a Time Tunnel remake. Or, heaven
help us, Dr. Who.

I had no idea. I'll try and be alert next time it shows up in the
listings. It did seem to me like the possibility for a dark
interpretation was certainly inherent in the concept.

I really enjoyed their 80s show. I wish I hadn't missed taping the
climax of Pat Paulsen's presidential campaign, where he gave his "You
won't have Patrick Leyden Paulsen to kick around any more" speech. It
was as funny as, if not funnier than, any of his appearances in the
earlier variety show.

Mind you, there wasn't anything quite as biting or funny as the original
Smothers Comedy Brothers Show's "Honey House" sketch, where Dick led a
tour group through "the actual Honey House... where Honey lived, and
Honey played, and Honey grew up" while performing the song better than
Bobby Goldsborough (who was reportedly amused by the sketch, and who
hadn't particularly wanted to record the song in the first place).

Years ago, I had the idea of recasting it as "Where do seven sinful
castaways spend their eternal torment? Right here, in Gilligan's
Inferno!" In my sketch, each of them represented one of the Seven Deadly
Sins.

Roy Hinkley - Pride (in his inventions)
Thurston Howell III - Avarice
Mary Ann Summers - Envy (of Ginger)
Jonas Grumby - Gluttony (just look at him)
Ginger Grant - Lust
Lovey Howell - Sloth (expecting to be waited on)
Willy Gilligan - Rage (carefully hidden behind a mask of random idiocy)

Then, of course, they'd spend their eternity in little psychodramas in
which all parts would be played by members of the island cast (and not
even Vito Scotti to break the monotony). The Professor would be unable
to invent anything that works right. Howell would have to beg, Lovey
would have to work hard, Skipper would have to watch the others eat
lavish meals. Ginger's charms would go completely unnoticed (in some
ways, it wouldn't be all that different from the show). This wouldn't
all be going on at the same time -- each would be in their own world,
like the dream sequences on the show. The others would be in their own
hells, also populated (apparently) by the rest of them.

Gilligan would be treated like a harmless idiot and have to carry wood,
pedal contraptions, and so on. Just like the show, in fact. Only instead
of three seasons, it would last forever.

In order to atone for this earworm, here is a file of the Smothers
Brothers "Honey House" sketch in mp4 format. It's about a 35MB download,
but you may find it eminently worthwhile because of the superb quality
of snark (and Dick's perfect reading). Super Dave spotters will notice
Bob Einstein as one of the ensemble company playing a tourist at the
'Honey House' Museum.

A Nit: The theory is fine, but some of the data is reversed.
The Beverly Hillbillies ('62) came 3 years before Green Acres ('65).

In this case, that's a reversal of a radio show, "Granby's Green Acres."
(Footnoted, just because.)

Once, on Petticoat Junction, Kate was trying to get advice from Sam
Drucker without dragging herself into it. "Suppose there was a widower,"
she said, "with three sons, and..."

"Oh, yeah," said Sam. "I like that show. Watch it all the time."

"And suppose," Kate says, "that the youngest son wants to get married,
but his father..."

Gale Gordon and Bea Benaderet are the leads. Some differences, of
