I was wondering how many of us have started using devices like iPads or
tablets or laptops, etc., to hold your filk books instead of phyiscally
bringing your filkbooks wherever you go. If so, what are you using, how did
you convert your stuff to carry in your device, have you converted
everything to be carried in a portable device, etc.?

We're still using paper.

I look through indexes and dig up songs people have requested, while
Barry is singing.
Sometimes we encourage people to look through our songbags, or pck up a
songbook and hand someone a song whose tune they know so they can sing it.
And, of course, sometimes we sell Xenos or Filker Ups to people who've
just heard a song and what to get a copy of it.

I keep a stash of lyrics I might wish to sing in my iTouch, but of
course there's never time to update that entirely. So my filkbooks as a
whole far outweigh the stash. But I'm more likely to actually have it
on me when there's time to filk. If I tried to bring them all along I'd
fall over.

Of course, you put the text on your keyboard's music stand.
I son't know if that's nearer your eyes than Barry's music stand is
(with his guitar in between hm and it).
I'm fairly sure it's easier for you to free up a hand to punch next
screen on your electronic device while playing your keyboard than it
would be for Barry to do so while playing the guitar.

Pri and I are gradually converting from paper to our Macbooks. We'll
probably go even further as Gary did and put everything on iBooks and
get iPads (even my farsighted eyes aren't quite up to singing off our
iPhones. I-i-i. ;)

At Musecon back in August I saw Sue Posteraro using an app on her Ipad
which scrolled the lyrics slowly up as she sang.

I didn't investigate further but it seems logical that the scroll
speed should be adjustable.

Mike Whitaker uses I think an iPad, with a foot switch to control scrolling.

I have a lot of lyrics, including copies of several web sites, on a laptop. Mostly
text or HTML. It displays in the browser, and has a full text index for searching.

Phil Mills (a canadian filker) has written an app for the iPad to
scroll lyrics via the iPad. (I forget the name of the app off hand).
He has 1-2 other apps out, too.

Barry sings in regular filk circles out of Xenos
(Times New Roman, 11 point)
but for concerts he wants bigger print so as to deliver better quality,
each song two pages, taped together, 14-16 point,
with notes on vocal quality (e.g. "tense" or "lyric") and colored areas
for a duet.
Guitar chords get written to the side, ideally in non-black ink.

It would be helpful if people noted not just what they're using but
whether they're singing a capella, playing guitar, playing keyboard, or
whatever.

The Bohnhoffs have largish screen devices (kindles? nooks?) which they
put on music stands, but I haen't asked them how they scroll the text.

I am not currently active due to tending to be in the part of the
country where it's "Off season" con wise (good weather) and not having
any $$$$ to go to the con anyway. This will change, and the date is
approaching faster every year (2014 unless the govermanurent messes it
up farteher, should have been 2013 but alas, they messed)

I have used a laptop (Several generations of them) for some time. I used
to have a flat bed scanner and will again when the time comes, but just
now I either hand type or download. I use CUTE-PDF to print pages I can
not copy or save.

There are advantages and disadvantages. The big negative is battery life.

I suspect that if you visit the music stores they may well have a small
USB 2-key keyboard, only this one uses foot pedals instead of finger
buttons.. the two keys next and previous page, Just designed for
performers. If they don't have them I claim the patent for the idea.

I think the simple answer is "If you're planning a filksing, make sure
there are plenty of power outlets for both instruments and PCs... and
consider providing power strips."

On a slightly related note, I've considered putting a floor outlet in
the middle of my living room.

A number of hosts of LAFA housefilks have to be reminded each time to
bring out lamps or turn on lamps with hidden switches.

Yep. I shuffle several floor lamps when I host a housefilk.

If I could only convince everyone to stand a circle in the center of the
room... facing outward... this wouldn't be needed ;-)

I've also been at housefilks and convention filks where a lightweight
music stand got passed around the room from singer to singer. And where
guitar tuners and sometimes capos got passed around too. One filk
convention saw a dealer bring battteries, capos, and tuners -- and end
up selling a few.
