Jordin's team has demonstrated the feasibility of beaming power, and
managed to win a prize in the bargain.

So, can we build the starway yet?

I guess they're building a stairway to the heavens.

Interesting synchronicity -- I'm finally getting around to reading David
Weber's _Ashes_Of_Victory_, which Jordin (or one of his distant
descendants who shares his name?) appears in. I've only encountered one
scene with him so far, but I was suitably amused.

Auction winner, I presume?

Power beams are sublime, so nobody will mind if they cook an
occasional goose.

Whups, not _Ashes_Of_Victory_ -- _War_Of_Honor_.

(Sorry, hadn't yet put the preceding volume back on the bookshelf and
grabbed the wrong one to remind myself of the title.)

I've been amused, but not tempted, by those auctions when they've gone
by in the past. Seeing the results might just change my mind about
bidding at some point. It's more an in-joke than literary immortality,
but more amusing than I expected.

Forgot to say: Congrats indeed!

(Jordin did a lecture on this project at the Worldcon, which was a nice
overview of the challenges involved. I don't know whether he has put a
version of that talk on line anywhere.)

Look up one of our own (A filker) Dr. Jordan Kare

Dr. Kare is of course a Doctor of Science, Rocket Science as it turns
out, and has a plan to power rockets using ground based power stations
and beaming the power... Mr, Kube-McDowell's "Laser/Ice" drive, is I
suspect, Dr. Kare's design.

Wow! That's twice in this year that Dr. Kare has hit the news with
his lasers.. (Bug zapper in the spring.)

My assumption would be beam stops, excluded airspace, and "we cook an
occasional goose" -- though actually, I'm not sure exactly what energy
levels we'd be talking about when spread over beam width.

I saw the article in the Washington Post. It's quite rare for me to do a
double-take while reading the paper. 8-)
