First Lutheran Church of Boston
299 Berkeley Street in Boston
The court at Hesse-Darmstadt boasted an active musical life, as evidenced by
the extensive catalogues of its prestigious chapel masters. The prolific
Wolfgang Carl Briegel was one of the most important German Kleinmeisters
between Schütz and J. S. Bach, but his clear and eloquent vocal writing is
seldom heard outside of Germany. Christoph Graupner, whose engaging
melodies and colorful instrumental accompaniments abound in his more than
1,400 cantatas, succeeded Briegel in 1712, refusing the position ultimately
held by Bach in Leipzig. Don't miss this rare opportunity to hear this
extraordinary music in concert with some of Boston's most talented singers
and instrumentalists!
