This is why newsgroups and mailing lists, should NOT, IMO, be
connected. On usenet, those who don't want to read the controversy
can EASILY killfile it; on mailing lists, the controversy should be
prevented by fiat of the list top. But if you have a gateway from
usenet to a mailing list, your mailbox fills up with crap.
Furthermore, telling usenetters to shut up only encourages us to talk
even more. Unlike a mailing list, the offender cannot be bumped from
usenet, he can only be flamed till he goes away.

Unfortunately, on usenet, one has to respond to loony postings, else
they be taken seriously by readers new to the newsgroup. See, for
example, Claire Gilbert's postings on sci.meteorology, or certain
long-running personal conflicts on soc.singles. If one does NOT speak
out against this stuff, it becomes the conventional wisdom. Once
again, this is a reason to NOT gateway lists to groups.
Many mailing lists have been started as a way to cut down on usenet
noise; it's a worthy endeavour and you're always free to do it.
I can't stand rec.music.classical, so someday I'll stop being lazy and
start an "advanced classical music snobs'" mailing list instead.
>So please, in the interest of preserving EARLYM-L as a going

I'm not concerned with preserving earlym-l as a going concern, since
I'm not a subscriber. (In fact, I *am* interested in preserving it,
but I think the ONLY way that will happen is to kill the goddam
gateway. As always, a voice in the wilderness.)
I AM, however concerned with preserving rec.music.early, and that
requires speaking up when necessary. I've got quite a number of
postings to catch up on, be warned. <grin>
