Sorry to say so, but playing Gibbons on piano is resulting in a
rendition which has nothing to do with the original.

It's not as bad as all that, but I certainly think it sounds better
on a harpsichord or similar instrument. That said, Byrd would be
the composer who wrote the most similar music, but I don't know any
piano recordings off the top of my head. There are several on
harpsichord.

Glenn Gould thought very highly of Gibbons. One of his favorite pieces was
the "Italian Ground." Katie Hafner's new book, "A Romance on Three Legs:
Glenn Gould's Obsessive Quest for the Perfect Piano," spends some time on
just that.

Gould made a fine recording of both Byrd and Gibbons: "Consort of Musicke by
William Byrd & Orlando Gibbons; Sweelinck: Fantasia in D" available on-line.

Sorry, but Glenn Gould didn't comprehend anything about early music,
and only made fully idiosyncratic recordings which wouldn't have been
recognized by any of the original composers as 'their' music.

We all know the gospel about early music (I adhere to it myself) and
it doesn't get us very far to repeat it parrot-fashion. This
gentleman asked specifically for piano performances and it happens
that Glenn Gould recorded some that were superb by any standard.
Since the original poster's message was somewhat difficult to
understand, it is not clear why he is only interested in piano
recordings. He would certainly have a much wider choice if he
included harpsichord and organ discs. I was very fond at one time of
Christopher Hogwood's recording of Gibbons on three historic
harpsichords and organs. Haven't heard it in years and don't know if
it is on CD.

By contrast- Sybrand Bakker's own recordings of the virginalists have set
the gold standard of depth and the finesse of execution of that music.
Pity he has no contract with a label.

Too bad the self-anointed, hypocrit 'I know everything' 'expert' Roman
Turovksy has no one to beat up in his own environment, so he seems
compelled to exercise his favorite 'hobby' flaming in this forum.
Maybe Roman Turovsky should just grow up, and dump the contents of his
