I heard him perform many times, both as a member of the Julian Bream
Consort; and as half of Anthony Rooley and James Tyler, which I was
amazed to see the obituary didn't mention. They took London by storm in
the early '70s, and produced two of the best albums of lute duets I've
ever heard: 'Renaissance Duets' and 'My Lute Awake' (L'Oiseau-Lyre SOL
325 & 336), both since sunk without trace. I transferred my copies to
CD long ago.
Sad news.

P.S. I see that both albums are available on gemm.com [under FOLK LPs
:-(] for $9.38 and $12.00 respectively. Someone should snap them up. The
first is IMHO slightly the better of the two.

Very much so. I had the extraordinary privilege of spending time with
him and the other members of the LEMG a few times, too long ago. He was
entirely congenial, very much a gentleman and scholar, and endlessly
willing to discuss music.
He certainly will be missed by a great many people.
