Anyone get to the Bob Dylan tribute opening event of the New York Guitar Festival on 12 Jan - known as the Royal Albert Hall Project? Eagerly awaiting a report of how it was and who did what......

Yup -- I was there with about 2000 other folks, around the same size as the Free Trade Hall audience. They had to close the theater after the first few songs. It was a really fine night -- standouts were Jim Lauderdale and John Leventhal on "Tell me Mama," Kelly Joe Phelps's gorgeous mellow "Mr. Tambourine Man," Stevie Jackson (of Belle & Sebastian) on "Visions of Johanna" (probably the best performance of the night), and Toshi Reagon blowing the roof off with "Rolling Stone." Larry Kaye and Marc Ribot's playing throughout took many other guitarists to school. Can give you the whole lineup and quick impressions if you're interested.

Here y'are -- in a rush, but thanks for asking: Oakley Hall, NY indie band, a strangely sung and paced “She Belongs to Me.” Natalia Zuckerman, daughter of Pinchas and Eugenia, a breathy “Fourth Time Around.” Stevie Jackson, in a skinny black suit and tie, taking everyone to SCHOOL on “Visions of Johanna.” Jason Isbell (ex-Drive-By Truckers), “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue.” Young Welsh singer Freeman – no first name, or perhaps it’s no last name? – calling out “Desolation Row” at the top of his considerable lungs – great voice, but even with a lyric sheet (and he was the only performer who used one) he effed up the words. For which he can be forgiven. I tangle 'em up myself .... Lost Town Chorus, “Just Like A Woman.” Kelly Joe Phelps, guitar god, a lovely finger-picking “Mr. Tambourine Man.” Jim Lauderdale (acoustic) and John Leventhal (electric), “Tell Me Momma.” Divine. Harry Manx (that wonderful 12 or heck is it 15-string lap thing he plays?) and Kevin Bright (electric), “Baby, Let Me Follow You Down.” Jesse Harris, “Tom Thumb.” Chocolate Genius Inc (Marc Anthony Thompson, with Marc Ribot channeling Robbie), “Leopardskin Pill-Box Hat.” A barnburner. Lenny Kaye, “One Too Many Mornings.” Solid gold. Richard Julian (acoustic) and Jim Campilongo (electric), ‘Ballad of a Thin Man.’” Toshi Reagon and “Big Lovely” (the Chocolate Genius Inc. lineup, with Ribot), “Like a Rolling Stone.” Yow!! Plus an encore, everybody, of “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.” No booing, no heckling, two thousand really happy people!

I wonder if any of these performances will end up on youtube, which I can now view with a little extra work on my part. I'd love to see Stevie in his skinny black suit and tie. Saw him with the rest of Belle & Sebastian in a fantastic show a few years ago. I'll have to look up who some of these other performers are, and that's something I enjoy doing, so thanks so much for your information. The more shows you see, Annie, the better it is for RMD. I look forward to your reports from the music side of the Universe.

Hey St Annie
Thanks so much for the detailed report. I too want to see performances on YouTube - here's one that Last Town Chorus organised and posted to her blog site and to YouTube literally the day after - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOZwiWh5MY8 Let's hope to see some more - haven't had a chance yet to search.
