The painting in an homage to Picasso: the parti-colored face is meant to
recall the colors and textures of the acrobat paintings, the multiple
perspectives is meant to evoke cubism, and the blue nose points to the
"blue period". And the fact that the title promises one thing and the
album delivers something totally different simply points to how much
Picasso is, in Dylan's opinion, commodified and deified beyond all
reason.

Didn't someone just point out a few posts back that Bob has a strong puritan
streak?

I got this from http://www.punkhart.com/dylan/reviews/self_portrait.html
I don't think it has much meaning, like the album. Go read that page and

And what is your credibility to this information you have posted?
Opinions usually start with, My Opinion Is... and not so factual sounding
as you have written.
In my opinion, the Blue Period in Picasso's career had nothing to do with
the color blue and all to do with the mood of his art.
I'd also like to say that the title, SELF-PORTRAIT, is quite explanatory of
Dylan in the sence that the songs on that album are completly not how I
perceive Bob Dylan to pick a list of songs to describe himself yet it is very
much so because my surprise at the content of the album is exactly a Dylan
trait. Got all that? So the album and the title are to me truly one in the
same, not misleading, not different.
And how do you know Dylan's opinion of Picasso?
I assumed everyone was perceptive enough to know I was making fun of the
people who find deep meanings in Bob's every wrong note/bad sketch/
trite rhyme. For all we know, the nose is blue because that was the
only color Bob had around the day he did that part.
Who the fuck cares, anyway. A nose is a nose is a nose.

And a nose by any other name would still smell.

It appears, from a subsequent posting, that Dino did not mean this
suggestion entirely seriously. However, I think the Picasso reference
is not at all inappropriate, though I would place it slightly later
than the Blue Period -- more like early 1907, studies for "Les
Demoiselles d'Avignon." There are also strong echoes of Fauve painting
in this portrait, early Matisse or Derain (who were often attacked for,
precisely, non-realist colours on noses, chins, ears, etc.) Whether or
not Dylan in 1970 might have been conscious of these references is
another question altogether (though I would never underestimate the
range of his knowledge). But the painting's apparent naivety does
suggest to me a fairly sophisticated relation to art history.

For the Billy Madison fans:
Bob : "Well, I drew the nose blue because I've never seen a blue nose
before."
Ms. Lippy : "Well Bob, It's an excellent blue nose. You've just passed
the 1st grade"
Bob: "That's quack-tastic"

Let me die in my footsteps
