I think it stands up better now than it did when it was released...since
there have been more than two handfuls of gems since the release of
SELF-PORTRAIT, one can take it for what it is, without the worry that Dylan
is all washed up. It's not my favorite...not by a longshot...but it does
make for enjoyable front porch music on a warm evening.

There ought to be a convention for the admirers of Self
Portrait,including myself and other selves.Three things to love about
Self Portrait-1.Living the Blues.2.the Band playing a bit uninspired
or tired?3. In the early morning rain.Bob Dylan & many like
Lightfoot.of course,that cover.and those Nashville Cats.that's over
3.Also,it isn't "Street Legal",which will have a much larger
convention,on the street they know your name,even if they don't like
you.HH

To get this up to 12 songs, suitable for release as a single album,
I'd add A Fool Such as I, Can't Help Falling in Love and Ballad of Ira
Hayes from the Dylan album, though I'm not sure they were recorded
during the Self Portrait sessions.
If the album had been released in this form, I'd listen to it now and
then and enjoy it.

Maybe if Andy's ex-wife Claudine Longet had sung the songs the speed
of the music might have worked. I have to admit to being a closet
Longet fan.

I remember being pissed off.
I was a dirt poor college student, and the price of that album made me
miss a good meal. It seemed arrogant and careless to me that Dylan
would release such junk. I sold my copy and bought a cheeseburger.

live/studio outtakes to fulfill his intitial LP contract with
Columbia? The fact that it's a double LP and with 2 versions of
Little Sadie should be evidence enough. Maybe Dylan should have
called it 'Goodbye Albert'.)
2. I like how in a few ads or pictures, Dylan is posing in front of a
farm (albeit on the side of a road) and trying to appear as the proud
owner of this farm, no doubt to throw off people looking for his house
in Woodstock, NY.
3. I like the fact that many (the majority?) of Dylan fans hate this
album... I guess they've forgotten more than they'll ever know...
about Bob... This album is loaded with gems and is great if sequenced
with other songs from this period from 'Dylan' and Nashville Skyline.
