I think it stands up better now than it did when it was released...since
there have been more than two handfuls of gems since the release of
SELF-PORTRAIT, one can take it for what it is, without the worry that Dylan
is all washed up. It's not my favorite...not by a longshot...but it does
make for enjoyable front porch music on a warm evening.
There ought to be a convention for the admirers of Self
Portrait, including myself and other selves.Three things to love about
Self Portrait-1.Living the Blues.2.the Band playing a bit uninspired
or tired?3. In the early morning rain.Bob Dylan & many like
Lightfoot.of course,that cover.and those Nashville Cats.that's over
3.Also,it isn't "Street Legal",which will have a much larger
convention,on the street they know your name, even if they don't like
you.HH

I don't love three things about it, but I like eight songs:
Alberta (either version; they sound almost the same to my ears)
Early Mornin' Rain
Living the Blues
Coper Kettle
The Mighty Quinn
Take a Message to Mary
Minstrel Boy
She Belongs to Me
Wigwam
To get this up to 12 songs, suitable for release as a single album,
I'd add A Fool Such as I, Can't Help Falling in Love and Ballad of Ira
Hayes from the Dylan album, though I'm not sure they were recorded
during the Self Portrait sessions.
If the album had been released in this form, I'd listen to it now and
then and enjoy it.

I have to say that Copper Kettle is worth the price of the album
alone, it's a wonderful performance.
And you have to admire Bob's cheek for releasing a version of LARS in
which he forgot the words!
A Fool Such As I is indeed a Self Portrait out-take - Ira Hayes and
Can't Help Falling In Love are from New Morning.

Not at all! And if you really like Self Portrait, I also have some
Andy Williams and Perry Como albums that you might enjoy too :)

Maybe if Andy's ex-wife Claudine Longet had sung the songs the speed

Longet fan.

You are in control until you are out of control.
I remember being pissed off.
I was a dirt poor college student, and the price of that album made me
miss a good meal. It seemed arrogant and careless to me that Dylan
would release such junk. I sold my copy and bought a cheeseburger.

Alan:
He released an entire album of vocals trip overs---DYLAN AND THE DEAD. I think
"Joey" may have made it totally unscathed. ;)

The man who inspired Bob to trot out his own live version of "MOON RIVER" in
the early '90s? The man who is the late '50s recorded the seminal TO YOU

inspiration for Elvis' own BLUE HAWAII opus? The man who forced MOR into bed
with Christmas tunes? The man who built a shrine in Branston (spelling?), MO?
The man who's own version of "Exodus" served as a blueprint for Bob Dylan's

No, it's true. You really COULD buy a cheeseburger for about 25 cents
in those days.
so much-1.Blue Moon,which dates loved(who couldn't "get" 61 0r
BoB)and that rarity doesn't disqualify the woman.2.I liked Bob singing
"the Boxer' twice cause Simon wasn't interfering.3.It hurts
me,too.few have talked aboutthis one.HH
1.Bob's fantastic covers of Copper Kettle and "Take a Message to M."
2.Bob's ego showing in his cover self portrait
3.The LP's inside jacket "Bob at Woodstock and recording photos"
and the long list of the great talent that "appeared" on the album.
bobblessed
2. I like how in a few ads or pictures, Dylan is posing in front of a
farm (albeit on the side of a road) and trying to appear as the proud
owner of this farm, no doubt to throw off people looking for his house
in Woodstock, NY.
3. I like the fact that many (the majority?) of Dylan fans hate this
album... I guess they've forgotten more than they'll ever know...
about Bob... This album is loaded with gems and is great if sequenced
with other songs from this period from 'Dylan' and Nashville Skyline.

I just listened to this album the other day and "It Hurts Me Too" is
great.
10 ?-ok,1.The Band,2.a better
"blue moon "than Andy Williams version,3.it gave some session guys a
little slack(like we're not making a "real" record"),4.no backward
masking?5.Columbia has no conscience,we found out.6.where were the
advisors:he acted deciseively on on,6.the willingness to not be taken
seriousy ever again (by some people),7,no graduate studentpapers -
???.9.Donovan couldn't do worse,,10,spent some family time,probably
the real motivation.H

Good news. There are literally thousands of uninspired insipid country
music albums out there. Fans of Self Portrait would be wise to seek
them out.

I guess you are agreeing with the "it sucks because Bob wanted it to suck"
school of thought. For whatever reason he did it, he accomplished it
in my book.

This morning "All the Tired Horses"sounded like a call to sensing wonder.
I overlooked that the desired response was for three(I overlook
many, many things). The two songs or is it three I enjoy with The Band
are my other things to love, about the album.
The Band isn't at their best,though.Agreed.
