Manhattan Kansas is a nice midwest college town ...
If you mean Manhattan the borough of New York CIty ... I'll quote Paul
Simon ... Anyway you choose you'll bound to lose in New York CIty ...
Where they'll roll you for a nickel and stick you for the extra
dime ... and that's just those on Wall Street ...
Manhattan has everything to offer that you could possibly want ... at
a cost though ... Everything there is more expensive ... and
crowded ... and noisy ... and tense ... but if on expensive
account ... you can survive well ... and take part of all the good it
has to offer also ...
The village is still fine to walk through ... and a lot of off (off)
broadway that can keep you amused relatively cheaply ...
Any specific questions ... feel free to ask ...
Fortunately I have the job part of it all worked out, that's actually
what's taking me there. It'll be a 6-7 day nose to the grindstone
thing morning till night and then a 5-day break every 2 weeks or so.
The guys I know that are up there working are making more than I've
ever thought possible. And they've been at it for 3 years.
But really I may just be going to get a picture of me and my wife
doing a pose in the same spot that matches Freewheelin'!

I float between too many computers, that email address is old and
dead. I think I updated it now but it should be

The village is more or less the same on the outside as 45 years
ago ... except for signs ...It's an historical district and the times
they ain't a changing ... very different on the inside ... last time
there was a couple of years ago at the Astor to see Blue Man Group
(highly recommended get front row seats ...) The Village Vanguard is
still vibrant ... good jazz ... Cafe Wha? is still there ... nothing I
consider special inside anymore though ...
Dear Gemmy,
i've emailed to that address.
As i state, i'll likely not be of much help, but at least i can show
you where that Freewheelin' cover was shot... ;--)
Good luck, i hope ya make it.
yr pal,
dudley
Yes. I live in this area and would help you out with specific
questions you might have.

We were there in '93 when I was the same age as Bob in that picture,
but our version didn't come out too well. It wasn't snowing that day
which didn't help, although it did snow during the two weeks we were
in Manhatten. We had some nice bagels in a little bakery not far from
Fourth Street. I was a bit disappointed with Greenwich Village
though, it seemed a bit of a tourist trap. We saw some terrible
singers in the Bitter End, and the guy on the door told me to go two
doors down and sit on the 4th stool along, which was where Bob wrote
Positively 4th Street on a napkin (according tot him). I went in, but
it was some kind of gothic lesbian bar and I didn't feel like staying
too long (not that I have anything against gothic lesbians). One
night we had a good time in a place where the bar was built around a
piano, and I sat there feeling like Tom Waits all night, it was cool.
The galleries in Soho were great also, and we had a delicious meal in
a Mexican restaurant somewhere nearby, that came with a free cockroach
under the salad bowl. We also saw two really good bands in a club on
Avenue B, the second of which had G.E Smith playing with them, and I
spoke to him at the bar afterwards and heaped praise on him for his
shows with Bob that I'd seen
Are they paying for your lodging?... What part of town is your
gig?... I used to live there about six years back...
I find out in about 2 hours. It's with an engineering firm that I
currently do local (Atlanta) work for as an independent contractor.
The room and board part of all of this is a huge factor. All I want
is a place to sleep and a shower until the money starts coming in.
It's downtown Manhattan and will possibly spread out to all 5 boroughs
in the years to come. It's that big Verizon upgrade that's going on.

Yeah, I'd say getting inexpensive/nicely-situated lodging is the main
crux... The amount of good food in NY available fairly cheap is
ridiculous... Great ethnic varieties of it... When I lived there, I
can't even remember cooking a meal in my apartment myself until my
wife moved in - either I went out for food, picked it up on the way
here and there, or had food delivered...
I'm wondering how practical it would be to get a pad off the island
near Hoboken or Newark.
-GJ
Hoboken or Jersey City are nice places to live... both a short PATH
train subway ride under the Hudson to Lower Manhattan... Newark is
kinda dangerous, imo... it has the same rep as Detroit and Baltimore
as far as vying for 'murder capitols' of the US...
Yeah, I was told that the birds fly upside down over Newark.

The cost benefit ratio is more in your favor ... you should be able to
find a place ... generally an easy quick train/bus/ferry ride to the
city ... (Include Staten Island) ... Careful where you stay though ...
Safe places in Newark are around the arena where there is a one cop
for each fan ... but only when a game is on ... and around the schools
(UMDNJ,Rutgers,NJIT) ... where private security forces do ok ... one
step outside that area though and ... oops ...
I take it you're a fios installer ...
Having grown up a short train ride away from where you're heading, but
having lived down off 141 and Jones Bridge for over 20 years, I can
tell you that you are in for an adventure. I hope you're up for it!
First thing you've got to to remember is to keep your costs down; hard
to do in NYC or Jersey, no matter what you try. You're as far away
from the land as bugs are from Jupiter so no home gardens there. You
might try getting a flat in the city, maybe up in Riverside. Get close
to the U but try to find a place a block-or-two off a train line. I'd
check with Columbia's student housing to see if anyone's looking for
roommates until you get settled. Find the right one, and you might
have your very own tour guide and willing Dylan-fan protege!
Here's hoping you can get them to pick up expenses!
> You're as far away
> from the land as bugs are from Jupiter so no home gardens there
They're against the law anyway, aren't they?
I think I'm ruling Newark out.
>
> I take it you're a fios installer ...
Close. I'm going to be field mapping and drafting the fiber route and
distribution lines for the buildings that want the service installed.
From the street level to the penthouse. I've done this sort of thing
before but NEVER in such a congested area.
You're as far away
> from the land as bugs are from Jupiter
What about the Annunaki? (lol)
What killed the city?
The pooper scooper law.
Not banning drinking in smoking lounges ??
Must have been the sterilization process under Giuilani and
Bloomberg.
Making the streets safer for high-end boutiques and monied shoppers
doesn't necessarily revitalize a city's innate cultural life. Under
these GOP clowns, Moondog would have been carted off as a vagrant and
the world would never have heard Stamping Ground, Bird's Lament or
Symphonique #6...
Hey, GJ -- I live in the Village and am happy to answer any questions
I can -- just email me. And if you're looking for a place that's just
a one-bedroom since it sounds like you're the one heading to NY, I saw
a fabulous one listed in a little local rental place on 8th Street
yesterday afternoon (on Washington St). Best, Annie
St Annie, thanks a lot! The project I'm to be on is shaping up and
we're getting the nuts and bolts out. I'm trying to swing it to where
my visits up there are rare and sporadic, but I have to follow the
almighty dollar. BTW, I'm FLOORED a the rental rates around there.
I hear you on the $$ front in every way. But there ARE some bargains
to be had. And Jersey City's a great place to be -- also, on the
island, Battery Park way and surprisingly the Upper East Side (way too
many apartments, not enough people wanting them these days) have some
great one-bedroom and studio deals. For a family? Fugheddaboudit.
But for single/couple, or couple with baby small enough to fit into
dresser drawer as crib, Manhattan's still possible.
Good luck & more info if ya need it,
