I saw this wonderful documentary on Doc Pomus last night and learned a
lot about him. One obvious connection between him and Dylan is that both
were highly intelligent Jewish songwriters. Beautiful intelligent women
were attracted to Doc Pomus despite him being fat and crippled.
Dylan is quoted as saying that everything you ever need to know can be
found in the song Teenager In Love. And once again, Dion, appearing in
the documentary, proved to be the oldies singer still in the best shape
in the 21st century.
In the 80s, Dylan apparently came to Doc Pomus and told him he wanted
Doc to write lyrics for the melodies Dylan couldn't find the words for.
It looks as if Doc tried to write a song or two that way but nothing
came of it.
Doc obviously was in awe of Dylan, especially as Dylan lead the charge
of singer=songwriters who put Doc out of business, at least until Doc
started collaborating with newer people like Willie DeVille.
I had no idea that Mort Shuman, Doc's main collaborator, decided, when
the singer-songwriter movement took over, to move to France where he
became a famous French lounge singer.
Doc too started out as a blues singer, and according to the
documentary, his best song was bought by RCA Victor but not released.
The reason was that when they found out that Doc Pomus was a fat white
crippled guy, and not a black singer, they figured there was no way they
could make a career for him in the age of rock n roll.
