Is Bob a star? A shooting star? Like Annie Oakley?

"Ah," said Benji. "Aha, now that does sound promising!" He rolled the
phrase around a little. "Yes," he said, "that's excellent! Sounds very
significant without actually tying you down to meaning anything at
all. How many roads must a man walk down? Forty-two. Excellent,
excellent, that'll fox 'em. Frankie baby, we are made!"

42 ... DNA
The answer to life the universe and everything ...
of course the question was what do you get when you multiply 6 by 9 ?

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy ...
Douglas Adams ...
When after millions of years of thinking ... the ultimate computer
Deep Thought came up with the answer to life the universe and
everything ... as being 42 ...
At first they thought the ultimate question was ... How many roads
must a man walk down ... after millions years more of computing the
ultimate quewstion was found to be what do you get when you multiply 6
by 9 ?

DNA as Adams is affectionately refered to passed on not too long
ago ... but leaves a big dedicated fan base ...

Mother Simpson: [sings] How many roads must a man walk down / Before
you can call him a man...
Homer: Seven.
Lisa: No, dad, it's a rhetorical question.
Homer: OK, eight.
Lisa: Dad, do you even know what "rhetorical" means?
Homer: Do I know what "rhetorical" means?

Which is of course 54, but 42 in base-13.

Adams denied that was his intent, claiming never to have joked in
base-13.

Name 42.

So long, and thanks for all the fish,
dudley
(i am not a number, i am deluded into thinking i am a free man.) (but
that's a different fan base)

There are several other myths around it ... but Adams said ... and I
do believe him ... that he just wanted an ordinary number that was
funny ... and 42 popped into his head ...

I do find it a nice tribute as to the various references made to it
elsewhere ... afterall although it was the answer to life the universe
and everything ... it was only one of a million (actually 1,134,783
but who's counting) satirical comments in his books ...

and then again ... I find the tribute to Bob also endearing ...

so 42 being the answer to how many roads ... honors 2 at once ...

Doh! Of course.

Great 'trilogy'. Horrible film.

Film wasn't great, but had it's moments & was far from horrible, IMHO.

I was disappointed in Zaphod. It must've not done well enough in
ticket sales to do 'Restaurant'.

In that vein, I really enjoyed the Dirk Gently books, especially Long
Dark Tea-time of the Soul. I think of them every time I have to move
a couch down some stairs.

I've read that they had the cast under contract for the sequel,
but without Douglas Adams + the poor box-office it was shelved.

I liked the cameo appearances of the original Marvin & Arthur (from the
early 80s BBC series)

Zaphod was probably the result of budget and/or technical restraints. Hard
to make a realistic two-headed alien. It was a clever although
disappointing solution.

Evidently, it is 42.
