What's the usual time-lag between the emergence of the vinyl version of a
new Dylan release, after the intial CD release ? Can we still assume the
original recording was done on 2" analog tape in the studio ?

You know a place to buy 2" new blank tape?

Modern Times was released on vinyl the same time as the CD and CD/DVD.
I received my copy by mail on Monday. It is a 2 LP set, 180 g vinyl.
Same pictures as in the CD/DVD release except the portraits of Bob are
missing. I bought it through the Sony online music store for about
$13.

Is it out on 8-track tape yet?

I heard it will be out on 4-tracks and 78s next week. The elitest goal is
to get to the worst possible sound quality, I suppose.

What's with people wanting freaking records, anyway? After giving away a
few thousand to a local library years ago, I still have a couple hundred
classics I wouldn't know what to do with.

Hell, I got rid of my turntable years ago. And now all my CDs are in
storage, too. Just don't need any of that crap anymore.

Bizarre.

So there's less visual information in/on the vinyl release?... Does it
come with a large size booklet?... (How bout if they just stuck a CD
booklet inside the vinyl cover... haha...)

All the pictures that are in the CD/DVD release (don't know what's in
the CD release, didn't buy it) are in the vinyl release except the
color portrait and black and white portrait of Dylan. The vinyl
release is a gatefold cover, the inside of the gatefold has the "full
band in studio picture" on one side and recording credits on the other.
The inner sleaves contain the other photos on the CD/DVD release (taxi
cab, cropped photos of band members, instruments, etc.). The LP labels
are similar to the design of the CD; has the music note and microphone
design. Side 1/2 the label is like CD, Side 3/4 the label background
color is white instead of black. Sound is very good, seems to be more
bass on the record than on the CD but that is probably an artifact of
my stereo system and not related to any mastering differences between
the two versions. No large size booklet included.

Thanks for the run-down... I have the Bootleg Series 4 RAH, and TOOM,
and L&T in their vinyl editions... TOOM is still sealed, I think,
since I had a cassette of it... I think they're all double albums, as
is MT... I think RAH has one extra photo of Bob playing acoustic
guitar in his dressing room, and all the photos and text are of larger
size than the CD booklet... Can't remember if photos are omitted from
the Cd version... and, if I recall right, the RAH album is in a shallow
box?...

Odd that the Dylan portraits are missing from the vinyl MT, but I'd
still rather own it than the CD version... 13 bucks is rather cheap
for vinyl these days...

I don't have any of the vinyl Bootleg Series yet, prices seem pretty
high where I've found them. The albums are longer now then they use
to be so the double lp versions are a necessity, but also keeping the
tracks farther away from the center helps with tracking and skating, so
I've been told.

A good resource for looking at different versions of albums (CDs,
promotional discs, vinyl, etc.) is www.searchingforagem.com. The site
is a little confusing initially, but once you get the hang of their
filing system it isn't too bad. Don't know if they have any of the MT
stuff up yet.

Good vinyl on a good system sounds better. Fact.

I believe all the later Bootleg Series were specifically mastered from the
analog reels, but I'm not so sure about the original Bootleg Series or TOOM,
L&T or MT. I actually recieved supposedly 'definitive' confirmation that
TOOM was recorded on digital, and the copy that was used to master the
record was probably 16/44 anyway, and that may well be the same for the
other two.

I wish they'd give us audiophiles some more info, but gotta be thankful for
the AAA info on the bootleg series stuff.

The only fact is that it sounds better to your ears.

yep....here ! http://www.quantegy.com/#Scene_1 Click on Products > Audio

It's been available for the last year, and the European plants like BASF
(Emtec) and I think Agfa are back on-line with tape production too.
Everything old is new again, and
you can bet its being snapped up by engineers who know the difference......!
As for mixing and mastering of the final product, now that's
different.....don't be surprised if it's all done on ProTools in the
computer. However, at least the source (can be) analog once again......these
tape plants had closed down for about 2 years, dark days indeed.

Wilbur, I was just browsing this thread, but could not pass up an
opportunity (at last, after so much folly) to absolutely, totally agree
with you.

Dark choc IS better.

I'm sure Bob himself prefers vinyl. I've also seen Johnny Cash's
American Recordings series on vinyl recently.
