My The Basement Tapes SACD came in the mail for me. What a strange
phenomenon, SACD goes extinct, and yet Mobile Fidelity cranks out that
old maligned offical Basement Tapes in an SACD version.

What's strangest of all is that they fit the whole thing on one disc.

Has technology changed or something? When I got Blonde on Blonde in
SACD, it came on two discs because apparently they couldn't fit it all
onto one disc. I never knew they could fit the Basement Tapes onto one
disc, so how are they doing it in SACD?

Meanwhile, what will it sound like? SACD is quite subtle in the way it
improves the sound. A well remastered cd is usually much more exciting
to listen to, sonically, than an SACD. And The Basement Tapes is
probably the worst sonically recorded of all official Dylan albums.

Tonight I will give it a listen.

Oh my, it sounds pretty terrific. Some of the Band songs sound a bit
strident, but Dylan, in his lower register songs, sounds wonderful. This
was when Dylan was at the height of his vocal powers, so it makes sense
that Mobile Fidelity redid this album.

Was it ever even remastered before? I see Mobile Fidelity has also
redone Freewheelin', Another Side, Bringing it All Back Home, and Blood
on the Tracks.

The remasterer is Rob LoVerde, on the GAIN 2 System.

I wonder what he's done to the sound of these other albums?

Of course, some would call this thievery. Why should we have to pay,
over and over, for the same product?

Music should be like software. We should get automatic upgrades when
they learn to make it sound better.

Of course, there is a high end audio industry, similar to the way exotic
sportscars loom over the auto industry, and these special edition cds
satisfy their needs.

The next step forward for music fidelity is going to be the Neil Young
big digital file system. All these remasters are going to sound very
tinny when that happens.

Blonde-On-Blonde did come out on a 2 channel single SACD back in the
early 2000's. The only reason that they had to put it on 2 SACD's
when they released the SACD box-set was that they did a multi-channel
mix of the album and THAT 5.1 channel mix wouldn't have fit on 1 SACD.

Thanks, Byung. That explains a lot
