This evening Garth declined the Artist Of The Year award at the American
Music Awards. He had defeated (Garth wouldn't like this word) Green Day,
TLC, Hootie And The Blowfish and Boyz II Men.
1. Should Garth have won?
Well, Hootie has only had about 2 hits this year and no previous
history of commercial success. TLC has had about 4 hits, but all
of them SMASH this year. Green Day has no doubt been THE talk of
1994/95, and they were possibly most deserving of the award.
I don't follow Boyz II Men at all, but they have had a good
following and good commercial success in the mid 90's.
Garth in 1995 basically recorded a new album, had some
re-releases of songs off "The Hits", a #1 with "She's Every Woman"
and I think "The Fever" didn't meet time specifications for the
AMA, so wouldn't have been a factor (positive OR negative -
let's not have that debate here).
I think Green Day or TLC should've won. Garth would be next in line.
2. Garth seemed to agree! He looked in total shock when he was announced.
Garth went around and hugged all the other nominees (Green Day,
I believe was absent). He went to the podium, stated that he
meant no disrespect to his fans or to the Academy, but said
something to the effect of one person winning the award did a
great disservice to ALL MUSIC. He said he would just leave the
award "right here" on the podium and left amidst stading ovation.
Could someone please E-MAIL me the following information:
1. When if ever will the AMA be repeated??? I would very much like
to tape it. Not only for Garth but for the excellent Tammy
Wynette presentation and the Shania performance and country awards.
(Some of which I missed).
2. Could someone please post the EXACT QUOTE that Garth said in
declining his award (from beginning to end of his speech?
I would appreciate this information VERY much.
Hey, when WAS the last time a "country" artist won Artist of the Year?

Wow! Who pissed in your Corn Flakes!?!..
First, let me say that I have been a Garth fan (not a huge fan, but a
fan just the same) for many years. And that People such as myself have
been buying his albums in droves, long before and after his admission
about the affair.
It零 also been my observation that the affair (nor his confession) has
had little or no affect on his record sales. Hell, I continue to see
postings in this news group from people who have only just now found
out about the affair. So your theory that we are being pandered to or
hustled by Garth seems to have alot of holes in it and holds no water.
By the way, it's Subconsciously (not subconsciencly)!

I know that I am not qualified to decide who should or shouldnąt get
nominated for an AMA award (let alone receive one). However, someone did
make that decision and they seemed to think that Garth was more than
qualified. Else he wouldnąt have won - Right?. I know that this is pure
speculation of course, but people need to remember that Garth (like most
of us) is his own worst critic. May-be, his history of hard work coupled
with his past success, makes him expect more of himself as an artist?.
Garth had an extremely light year last year. Aside from the Hits Album,
and one or two sucessful songs off of Fresh Horses he really didnąt have
an łA˛ typical GARTH year. That along with the fact that he didnąt do a
US tour last year. He honestly feels that someone else should have
received that award because he feels that the other artist deserve it
more. Should he have won?.. I don't know, but I think we should respect
his choice to turn down the award.
All I do know is that after seeing the awards program, I am extremely
happy to see that the AMA continues to recognize the contributions of
country music.
Oh yeah! Our local radio station in San Diego said that Garth said that
he would have liked that award to go to Hootie and the Blow Fish! Can
anybody else verify this?..
Let me be the first to disagree to many of the points made. The shock on
Garth Brooks' face when the award was announced made it apparent that he
had a problem with winning it. At first, I was confused over his initial
response, but his actions with the other nominees and his 'speech'
made everything clear.
This wasn't marketing.
As for his music, I believe that he is a much better performer when he
sings the ballads. His faster songs seem to get more attention/airtime
lately, but nobody is being duped into spending money. If you buy his
music, you know that you'll get a combination of both.
Just an opinion...
I agree w/ Steve. I think he planned the whole thing. He ALWAYS has to be
bigger, better, different. I'm tired of his false humility and the ever-
present tear in his voice. I wouldn't feel this way if he didn't constantly
do something to garner attention! I could be wrong - maybe he is truly a
humble person. But good lord, it was just a stupid "trophy". He could've
been a little more gracious and appreciative and just accepted that darn
thing. Why he didn't protest the nomination before hand or ask that he not
be considered? No headlines that way!

I think Garth is hoping that the people will think that by
That is what my local station said as well.
> Well, Hootie has only had about 2 hits this year and no

This was Hootie's major label debut and it yielded 4 big hits and
was one of the top if not *the* top selling album of 1995.
Hootie's album crossed over many fan lines - the others did not -
'cept for Garth. But since he didn't do much in '95 I agree with
him.

I know that two of the local radio stations here in Dallas said that
Garth wanted it to go to Hootie and the Blow Fish, too. You weren't just

Garth is very savvy at marketing and maintaining an image. It's hard for me
to imagine him NOT realizing the implications of his actions--namely that
it would give him an aura of humility while also drawing significant
attention to himself. Whether this was his sole motivation I do not
know (and in fact he's the only one that actually does).
Before deifying him for not accepting the award consider this:
1) If he didn't feel he didn't deserve the award he could have
refused the nomination BEFORE the ceremony. As it is, everyone
knows he won it and he probably irritated many Academy members.
2) His actions border on insulting previous winners of the award.
3) He could lose _nothing_ by "refusing" the award except a little
lump of plastic because, as said before, everyone knows he won.
4) He's an entertainer, and a very good one (at least in that he
is popular). He couldn't get to be where he is if he didn't know
how to work a crowd and have some vestige of acting ability.
It is certainly possible he could have simulated the "genuine"
surpise (but I'm not saying he did).
That being said, I must admire his action as a masterpiece of PR.

What I found most peculiar about Garth's acceptance of the award was his
urge to hug all the rest of the nominees. I realize that this happens in
most awards shows, but typically the artist hugs the people they are
with, their supporters, maybe shakes hands with a few of the other
nominees...I don't think I've ever seen anyone go out of their way before
to hug every single other person nominated. And to be quite honest, I
don't think any of the other artists looked very pleased to have Garth
hugging them. I thought it looked a bit contrived, myself...Garth went a
little overboard on this one.
Of course, stopping center stage, pausing for a moment, and then bowing
to the audience struck me as a little strange, too...a little too
orchestrated for my tastes (particularly with a little hindsight as to
his "suprised" non-acceptance speech - although I have a witness to prove
that I remarked on the peculiarity of the hugging and bowing while they
happened live ;) ).
-d.g.
Disclaimer: I am neither attacking Mr. Brooks, nor his music. I am
merely pointing out what I considered somewhat peculiar behavior at an
award's show. I thought Pamela and Tommy Lee were a little peculiar
kissing and talking about their baby. I thought John Travolta and Sharon
Stone were a little peculiar in their awards acceptance speeches at the
Golden Globes...hell, for that matter, I thought Emma Thompson was a
little peculiar in accepting hers (and for the record, Emma walks on
water ;) ). So please, kids, let's not take this comment too personally.

Just a few facts on the chart success of the artists nominated for the
AMA "Artist of the Year," by looking at Billboard's Year in Review charts
and artists' relative performance on those charts.
Top Pop Artist (Calculate by adding performance of all album and singles
on chart for year)
1. TLC
2. Boyz II Men
3. Hooite & the Blowfish
12. Garth Brooks
15. Green Day
Top Billboard 200 Albums Artist (with number of albums currently on
charts and included in calculation in parentheses)
1. Hootie & the Blowfish (1)
2. Garth Brooks (4)
3. Boyz II Men (2)
6. TLC (1)
7. Green Day
Top 200 Albums
1. Cracked Rear View - Hootie and the Blowfish
2. The Hits - Garth Brooks
3. II - Boyz II Men
5. Crazysexycool - TLC
7. Dookie - Green Day
Top 200 Album Artists
1. Hootie & the Blowfish (1)
2. Boyz II Men (2)
5. TLC (1)
6. Green Day (2)
(Garth didn't make the top 25)
Top 100 Singles Artists (with number of charted singles in parentheses)
1. TLC (4)
2. Boyz II Men (5)
3. Hootie & the Blowfish (4)
(Neither Green Day nor Garth made the top 100)
Hot 100 Singles (only 3 artists even made this chart, so here are the
chart locations for their charting singles)
TLC - 2, 3, 28
Boyz II Men - 5, 12, 50
Hootie & the Blowfish - 22, 26, 33
Why did I bother typing all this out? To show that (for once) a fan
voted award like the AMA's might have actually picked the top performing
chart artists as nominees (a miracle in itself considering the usual
nominees in some categories). Second, I suppose I was a little perturbed
by the comment that Hootie "only had about 2 hits this year." All of the
nominated acts has chart success this year with albums, but I think it's
obvious that the two groups with the largest overall success this year
had to be TLC and Hootie.
As to previous commercial success, that really has nothing to do with
this award since it is clearly for *this* year. I find it rather
peculiar that Garth managed to pick up this award (or not pick it up, as
he chose) considering the lack of a new studio album (it's pretty much a
safe bet that nothing released as late as November could be included for
a January awards show...they have to have time to count the votes) and
virtually no chart presence until very late in the year. I guess this
shows that the rest of the musical listeners in the US have finally begun
accepting Country as a mainstream format (though, you'll notice, the
mainly pop fans that vote for this award are still voting Alabama as best
group - nothing against Alabama, but 19 awards from 23 nominations?
There are quite alot of other groups out there these days, but most
mainstream listeners probably still only "recognize" the name Alabama).
So who should have won? TLC had one heck of a year, including quite an
impact in video (anybody see the one for "Waterfalls?" Amazing stuff!),
but I think for the sheer abiilty to keep jumping back into and out of
the Top spot on the album chart for weeks on end, I'd have to vote for
Hootie & the Blowfish.

Either you like him or you don't. If you like the way he sings and/or
his songs; then you buy the CD's. If not, you buy someone elses's. I

I just don't agree at all with this philosophy. I'm not a big
Garth fan, probably never will be, but I do like some of his early
work. There is absolutely nothing he can do apart from singing
songs I like to hear that will "dupe" me into buying any of his
albums.
You call it a marketing ploy but IMO I don't agree. I don't much
care for awards but I always get a kick when someone turns one down.
Especially the way Garth did. I wish more people would do it.
Garth earned some respect from me that night, he didn't earn any of
my hard earned money. He won't until he puts out some music I want
to buy. Right now I only own one of his albums and I'm not inclined
to expand that collection just yet.

All the other nominated artists were in the pop/rock genre,
right? Garth was the only artist in the country genre. Are we
beginning to get the picture? All the votes were split for the
other artists, but all country-voting artists voted for Garth.
Another prime example of this would be the Presidential Election
of 1992:
Everyone against Clinton voted for Bush *or* Perot. Those votes
were split and Clinton won anyway...
Of course, all these opinions are mine, and these are just
observations, not opinions on Garth's accepting the award or not
and whether he deserved it or not...etc.
BTW, Reba looked and sounded Great to me (as usual), Linda Davis
looked wonderful (new album is cool!), Shania Twain proved again

and was anyone else surprised by Blackhawk being nominated for

I know Garth personally. If the world only knew of all the good things
he has done for people that never made the news. Sure Garth is good at
marketing himself, but do we hate him for that? I feel that his
turning down the award was a sincere gesture towards his colleagues.
Garth did not start at the top, and he knows that many of the artists
who don't achieve his level success, still worked just as hard.
As for the cheating thing...yeah, that was a major mistake. But, I
guess if I had to write-off everyone I knew who made a major mistake
I'd be pretty lonely. Most people that are close to Garth know he is
the real thing. I do not believe he was visualizing soaring record
sales when he decided to admit that he had made such a mistake. And I
also believe, given his popularity, that he had no choice but to beat
the tabloids and make it public. What better way is there to stifle
the B/S.

how do you now it's false humility? I'd have to agree with Garth's attitude.
those award shows are nothing but self-congratulatory commercial fronts
for most albums sold. It's not right to call someone "artist of the year"
when there's hundreds of brilliant jazz, metal, flamenco, etc, musicians
struggling to afford another set of strings. His music has one-one thousandth
the complexity, depth, and intelligence of some other forms of music, including
country. I happen to enjoy some of his stuff, but let's call a spade a spade here. he's just one of the highest-grossing artists. he's good at what he does; that's the
point i think he was making.
i think this same attitude annoyed people who didn't "get" the Red Strokes video.
that's his attempt at art. and everyone crucified him.
For a supposedly modern and cosmopolitan new country audience, there seems to
be more ignorance and shallowness than ever before.

I did not watch the entire show and missed the part where Garth received
his award. But help me out on this academy and its members thing. It is my
understanding that this is another one of those made for TV awards and
there are no "academy members" to disgruntle. Isn't it a Dick Clark
Production. It is merely a
nominate-who-will-draw-the-biggest-ratings-and-then-do-a-public-poll-on-the-winner
type of a thing. Which would explain Garth's winning. More people in the
general populace know his name than the others or prefer his style of
music over the others whether or not he did anything or not last year.
Which makes me glad he turned it down because of the premise of the awards
is phony anyway. It is the show and its ratings not the work of the
artists that matters. That is what Garth was saying when he turned it down
- how can you nominate me obviously, you know nothing, I did less this
year than before and I win!
In short there may not be an esteemed academy which to insult. Its merely
producers who are in need of ratings.

=====================================================================
Garth was right. I think he's the finest all around entertainer in
music today, but 1995 was not "Garth's year". He released an album
late in the year (after what seemed like months of airplay for the
first single), he toured overseas (these are the American Music
Awards, not the World Music Awards), and the album sales which
accounted for his nomination were for his Greatest Hits package, which
he clearly stated at other times - this isn't new music, I didn't even
want a greatest hits package. He did the limited release thing with
it because if you like his music, you'll buy all of it, not just a
greatest hits package (anyone with his hits package can claim to like
him and think he's great, but if they have 10 beatles albums, and this
one GH package, who do you think they really like more) I read GB's
explanation for his actions, and I agree, Hootie did do more for music
last year, and if this was an award for who did more, they deserved
it. My understanding was the award was for "favorite artist" Come
on, it's a popularity contest and depending on who the "samples" of
the poll are, you'll have a different winner each time. No one
man/group should be give the title "favorite artist of the entire
country" based on a vote by a select few.

Oh my God!!!! You are SO right!!!!! Why, I bet he even paid off the
academy memebers so that he could win. Yeah, yeah, he PLAANNED it.
And he wanted to act surprised and acn play to his audience and act
humble because it would be stupid to accpet the award, yeah, that's it.
For those of you who didn't get it, THAT was sarcasm. If you are
foolish enough to believe that he COULD have planned it, then you are
really being stupid and simply trying to bash on Garth, and I can't
respect that. At least be a little intelligent, even if you don't like
the guy. And maybe the reason he didn't protest the nomination is
because he feels a duty to country music. He needs to support it, and
he is quite possibly the only country artist who has the right to stand
up there with the likes of TLC, Hootie and the Blowfish, Green Day, and
Boyz II Men. And who really thought he would win?! C'mon....this
