Oh yeah, that! Kind of gets lost in the shuffle, doesn't it?
This is the kind of two-faced phoniness about him that disgusts me. If
you examine his *actions*, as opposed to his *words*, everything he has
done this decade is to promote himself over others and make sure he comes
out on top.
From the 100-million goal, to holding his album hostage for more
marketing dollars, to the seemingly endless repackaging, to his cheesy
marketing tactics, to the cheap publicity, to the Scott Hendricks firing,
he has exhibited a clear indication that *he* wants to be the one on top.

We're not anti-webtv, Stacy! We're anti-idiot! :-)
I'm not saying he should be the complete opposite, but I don't believe
other artists do the things I mentioned above. And I'm sure you respect
lots of other artists.
When you say to be the "best"--that's different things to different
people. The artist that sells the most is in no way the best to me.
Especially when he does things that other artists don't do. As we've
said before, McDonald's hamburgers are not the best.
A successful businessman in any other profession doesn't necessarily have
to have the highest volume. There are businessmen and companies that
enjoy what they do, are quite profitable, and it doesn't bother them that
they're not #1 in sales.
If you want to look at products... Hayes made the best modems, yet they
just closed. Microsoft is #1 in operating systems, and how much respect
do they have? Food is another example. I prefer RC or our local
bottler, but Coke and Pepsi are on top. Packards were great cars, but
they closed. Don't you think Starday and a lot of independent labels put
out some great stuff, but most of them aren't around.
It's well-known in engineering circles that it isn't the best product
that has the biggest market share, but the one that has the best
marketing.
Unless I have some stock in a business or own it or work for it, I don't
really care how much money they take in or make in profit. I just want
them to make enough to continue to be around.
And the nice guy thing--most people never meet him. So it doesn't really
matter whether he's nice to his industry cohorts or not. We do see
things like trying to stop used CD sales, which isn't so nice.
All the more reason for him to pout at not being in the spotlight.
Scott, are you saying that because you personally have not met this man it
doesn't matter if he's a nice guy or not? That you can just make these
blanket judgements about what he's like? That makes no sense.
Furthermore, you know NOTHING about what was going on behind the scenes when
Garth withheld Sevens. If you did you might re-think your accusations.
I really wonder about people sometimes. Success appears to be all right only
if you get it by accident. God forbid an artist be a smart business person
like Garth. Or Conway. Or Reba. Or George Strait. Or Vince. Or Alan.
You think those folks can't be tough at the negotiating table? God forbid an
artist have the guts to tell his record label he is taking charge of his
career. Better he wind up working the shrimp boats around Houston so you can
bitch about the BTO's who ruined him.
I've worked with artists who would stab their staff, associates and fellow
artists in the back in a second. Garth isn't one of them.
Patsi
Good comeback!
Of course not. I never said me personally. But if most people do not
meet him, why would it matter much to everyone else if he is a sweetheart
to his coworkers or not?
> That you can just make these
> blanket judgements about what he's like? That makes no sense.
I didn't just form these judgments in a vacuum. Since the early '90s
people that have said these same things about him to me. Nashville
people like him because he's a sweetie and moneymaker, but elsewhere they
look at his actions too. I'm not speaking for everybody outside of
Nashville, I'm just saying it isn't like Nashville seems to be.
Take the used CDs deal. What about the music that is out of print. He
didn't care if no one ever heard it again? That nobody should resell
their CDs? He just backed off of this without any apology or explanation
that I ever heard. I wonder who he thought he was.
> Furthermore, you know NOTHING about what was going on behind the scenes when
> Garth withheld Sevens. If you did you might re-think your accusations.
It seems to be your position since you came here that people shouldn't
comment because there are industry-private details. People can only
judge by the information they have available. Either explain it or keep
it quiet, but people are going to say what they think whether or not
there are supposed secret factors.
Garth knows what people say about him. If he thought it was important
enough for them to think otherwise, he might reveal what went on during
those negotiations. He has chosen to take the criticism instead.
Must be juicy!

Whatever George, Reba, Alan, or Vince might have done, they haven't made
it anywhere near as visibly and blatantly marketing-driven,
numbers-oriented, and self-important as what Garth has. I have a lot of
respect for all four of them, and think one of them deserved the award.
I would love to see Garth compete with the same marketing that everyone
else gets and see how he does.
> I've worked with artists who would stab their staff, associates and fellow
> artists in the back in a second. Garth isn't one of them.
I believe you and that's nice.
I must admit to having mixed feelings about Garth Brooks. I've never been to one of his concerts and the first Garth CD I bought was "The Limited Series" which I thought was a good deal because I "came late to the party". I have since bought "Sevens" and "Double Live". His first CD is by far his best and his last few releases have been (to put it kindly) mediocre. Having said that, I really like a lot of his music. But there's something about Garth himself that makes me very uneasy. Anyone who's read the books "Three Chords & The Truth" and "Dreaming Out Loud" about country music in the 90's knows that Garth is very coldly calculating when it comes to his career. For me and a lot of others, being aware of Garth's mass marketing manipulations sometimes makes it really hard to enjoy his music. One wonders listening to a Garth CD if Garth really likes this music himself or if he's thinking this is the kind of music that'll make us plunk down $16.99 for his CD instead of Vince's, Alan's, Clint's, Reba's or George's.Although I go back and forth about Garth himself, I do know I don't like a lot of his fans I've come across online. I used to be on the Garthbox mailing list and when "Double Live" came out, I said "It's Your Song"Â had "the kind of saccharine sweet sentiments best left on a Mother's Day card". One would think that from the response I got from the Garthboxers that I had attacked their mothers, Garth's mother and motherhood in general. The flames damn near set my computer desk on fire. Some Garthnuts go postal when one dares to criticize The Big G. I guess it's because they like to live vicariously through Garth because Garth tries so hard to make himself seem like one of us. If one saw a picture of Garth, not knowing who he was, he'd probably think this guy was the Automotive Parts Dept. manager at the local K-Mart.
In the end, I guess naming Garth "Artist of the Decade" really doesn't mean a hell of a lot. Creatively, the mainstream country of the 90's has become pretty much brain dead. country music is about to go through a bust like it did after the "Urban Cowboy" boom in the early 80's. It busted because the BTO's at the time kept churning out the same low-grade muzak they thought country music fans liked. With Garth being the poster boy of 90's country, his sales will no doubt go bust along with every one else's despite his best marketing efforts.
If there's a good side to this it's that after the "Urban Cowboy" bust in the 80's the record companies - desperate to find the Next Big Thing - signed artists like Steve Earle, Lyle Lovett and k.d. lang who then recorded some of the best country music of that decade. It's weird that Nashville makes its best music when the sales are down.

Patsi: After being here for over 2 years... I have come to the conclusion that
if anyone in the industry who knows some things can be trusted it is you. Now
you made some interesting statements regarding the withholding of SEVENS. Can
you back that up? Can you tell us what the real story was? In all honesty I
am inclined to believe that Garth withheld the album to get Hendricks OUT and
Quigley IN. I also believe that the "relative failure" (approximately 4.5
million in sales) of FRESH HORSES was related to "Fever" being released as a
single. It had turned off some fans and may have convinced some NOT to buy it.
Too bad as they would not have "That Ol' Wind" in their collection, (it's
Garth's best song IMHO). It was the music, NOT Capitol's fault as far as I can
see. Look at SEVENS... the music was better, so the sales were better. He
does NOT need hype. He could silently release an album and it would SELL SELL
SELL. Word of mouth would insure that. And if it was great music, it would
even sell more!
I think we all know what Garth is capable of, both positive and negative. But
Patsi, if you can shed light on this.. I am receptive enough and would be more
than happy to listen. I would be very appreciative. If it betrays
confidences, etc. then I'd understand if you decline. But I hope you can help

See, this is what really bites about having these wars... you have the people

The diamond award represents an album going ten times platinum. It was
introduced by the RIAA this past March. The RIAA hosted a big ceremony to
honor all the artist's who'd sold ten million copies of an album. Garth was
presented with four diamond awards, Kenny Rogers with one. Shania was on tour,
so she couldn't be there to pick up her Diamond award for 'The Woman In Me.'
When 'Come On Over' reached diamond status a month later, Dick Clark thought it
would be a nice idea to present both Diamond awards to Shania at the ACM
Awards, since they were coming up so soon.

Perhaps you haven't heard rock music lately. It's not what it used to be
either. So if country has filled the boots of what rock used to be, so
what? The precident for that would be Johnny Cash, Buck Owens, and Carl
Perkins. The minute country stops evolving is the minute it becomes
boring. It's grown, expanded, taken in other forms of music, and along the
way alienated some of the earlier fans. But that's what happens when
things change. For them, there're always the old records. Thankfully, no
one's out to "colorize" them, as they did with the old B&W movies.

Barbara,
I'll take your word for it b/c you taped it and watched it again;
however, unless my memory fails me (which it tends to do even at my
age), I don't recall Garth's facial expression as being "cold".
Granted, he looked quite intent the entire night; however, he had this
expression even while being recognized as Artist of Decade which I don't
quite think would upset him.

That's easy for you to say. Shania confirmed her appearance on the ACM
show at the last minute, and it was too late to work her in as a
performer. The best she was going to do was be a presenter. So how do you
give face time to one of the format's top-sellers? You create an excuse.
A lot of those honorary awards serve the same purpose. They bring the
legends out to an event they normally wouldn't attend. A famous story
about Willie Nelson was that he wasn't going to attend his own induction
into the Country Music Hall of Fame. They had to break tradition and
announce that he was receiving the honor in order for the honoree himself
to be there.
Brett...Think about it this way: What if you and I did the same thing
for a living...something that really wasn't all that competitive, that
people buy a lot of. Meaning music, or clothes, or something. Not some
product people only buy one or the other of, like a car or a PC.
We could have gone on just doing our best. But I made some type of big
contest out of it for some reason, always trying to sell more than you.
There was no need to, I just wanted to sell more than you so I could be
#1. I even got people fired so I could advertise more.
Then after 10 years of this, there's some award for it. And after 10
years of trying to make sure I came out on top, when I get the award I do
a 180-degree turn and say, "Brett, I wish I could share this award with
you". Wouldn't the phoniness disgust you totally? Wouldn't you just
want to take that award and wrap it around my neck?

However, what has Garth ever done to damage the careers of his competators?
He's a tough competator, but he fights clean. He merely focuses on making
the best music he can, present it to the public as best he can, and see
what happens. He has never said his music is better than theirs. In fact,
he's always been deferential to Reba & Strait. When Garth got his first
Entertainer of the Year award 8 years ago, he said his two heros were
George Strait and George Jones. And he's always said that if these awards
were fair, then Reba would win Entertainer of the Year every year. Back
then, Garth had only sold about 5 million records. So when Garth said that
last week, he wasn't saying anything new. He's been saying the same thing
for 8 years. And if you think that Strait and Reba don't play hardball
with their record labels from time to time, and perhaps haven't gotten a
few people fired in their 20 years at MCA, then you're very naive.
Sounds like he gets someone fired that gets in his way. "Competators" is
not a word.

I see. Then he thinks his music, which is *not* the best, should sell
the most. Interesting approach.

He can say just as much as you do, and I'll still look at his actions

So who have they gotten fired and for what? Have they ousted a man from
his job over the amount of advertising for something as insignificant as
one stupid album?

He has said that KISS was a major influence on his live show. Not his
music. Get your facts straight.

"Insignificant?" How else do record labels make money? If a person screws
up the release of an album by that label's top artist, they should get
fired. An artist's career is judged by their music. Getting that music in
front of the public is the job of the label. In point of fact, the man who
was fired was in over his head. He admitted as much. He was a talented
record producer who wasn't experienced in merchandising. So now they have
an expert in merchandising who doesn't know anything about music.
What I always found interesting about Scott Hendrick's tenure at Capitol was
that the year Garth didn't release an album, Deana Carter and Trace Adkins
broke through and sold big numbers. Since Pat Quigley took over, Deana and
Trace's sales have dropped dramatically. Also, almost every artist that didn't
have a connection to Garth at Capitol (Billy Dean, Suzy Bogguss, Tanya Tucker,
John Berry, River Road) parted with the label after Quigley took over, in favor
for Garth's songwriting buddy (Steve Wariner,) guitar player (Ty England,)
and backup vocalist (Susan Ashton.) It just seems like Garth is the only
priority for Capitol.
It evidently wasn't estimated that the sales were likely to cover the
horrendous amount of marketing dollars that Garth wanted. Did Scott
Hendricks alone do the estimation and financials? And what are the
current financials anyway? I'm sure you'd like to make up some numbers.
> An artist's career is judged by their music.
OK. Now I'll ask again, who did George Strait and Reba McEntire get
fired, and what exactly was the issue?
In his book "Dreamin' Out Loud," Bruce Feiler calculated that for Capitol to
make a profit on Garth's records after marketing expenses, they would have to
sell 8 million units.
Now Kevin, even you have to admit that Deana did not help her own cause
with her sophomore album. This album doesn't hold a candle to her debut
release which probably explains the decline in sales. With a song like
You Still Shake Me (is this even a song?), I'm surprised it sold as many
copies as it did!

What I don't get Scott is why you're not applying the same personal actions
arguement with Tracy Lawrence. There you say he should be judged on his music
and not personal problems. What's the difference?
Coop
I thought "Everything's Gonna Be Alright" was a damn good CD, actually.
That's an understandable question. Since music is also a business, then
we discuss that, too. (And Garth has definitely shown everyone that it's
a business.) So we're discussing Garth's actions including his business
dealings.
Their personal lives I think are private. You notice when Garth was
accused of the same stuff here I didn't say a word.
Feiler's book was the most well-recieved, critically acclaimed book on the
country music boom. The only people who didn't like it were Garth fans because
Feiler didn't kiss Garth's ass.
I can understand the reluctance to make this risky of a gamble. That's a
break-even point that is double the sales of the previous album, Fresh
HorseShit.
And, according to Feiler, they need to actually sell through 8 million copies,
not just ship them and get the certification.

Every President who runs a company remakes it in his own image. That's the
case pretty much everywhere. A new President comes in, and he has his own
priorities, and has his own way to achieve his goals. The only reason it's
been so obvious at Capitol and not at the other labels is because there
hasn't been as much turnover at the other labels. But how many records did
Bryan White and Kevin Sharp sell at Asylum once Kyle Lehining left? Both
were Platinum-selling artists two years ago.

Actually, I haven't a clue how much was spent and how much was made. I
remember you were quoting some multi-million dollar figure six months ago.
But you never said where it came from. I also remember reading a quote
from Quigley where he said even he didn't know the actual figure, and was
surely not going to give it to the public. But the bottom line is that he
still has a job, and Scott doesn't, so he must be doing something right to
please the higher-ups. And you don't please stockholders by spending more
than you take in.
I am not a Garth fan and I don't agree with that book.... so, other than
Garth fans have the same feeling about Feiler.... any author that feels they
need to trash artist to sell books... Isn't worth the paper they write on...
That book was as unprofessional as they come.

Garth has never been accussed of doing what Tracy did??. What is worng with
Garth's business dealings anyway?. I mean Scott Hendricks called Fresh horses a
dead album, i dont blame Garth for holding back Sevens. Its his career , his
albums he can do what he likes. Dont you find it ironic that the only album Scott
hendick had control of, was the one that didnt sell as much.
Yeah but Pat quigely has the biggest selling artist in music history, Steve Warnier and
Dena Carter, Garth will always sell becasue of the music, but what scott did to Fresh
Horses was repugant.
heck you guys play more with figures than the newzealand government. In 1995 the buudget
Scott wanted for Fresh Horses was about as much as the budget for "the Moffats", it was
embrassing, and as mainstream media will tell you, to break even Fresh Horses would of
have only to sold 2 million, (thats spending the money that garth wanted) How much money
has garth made for Capitol and Nashville?? Millions!!!!!!. Perhaps Scott should sell all
his cars and give the money to charity if hes such a great guy.
Sevens has now sold 10 million world wide. Garth has sold 100 million world wide, you
dont put up those figures for producing music that is horse shit scotty. or perhaps you
think you can do better???????
Anyone who has gone to Nashville Scene's web page will know they are the most anti garth
site on the net. Its one step away from defamtion of charter.
Scott Hendick got fired for not doing his
job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Its not Garths fault that other artists dont sell, believe me if Garth
didnt come on the scene do yuo think country would of gotten the exposure
it did, i mean really, Nashville goes Garth a thankyou.
For someone who is a celver writer you sure say some dumb ass comments.
First yes George Jones and George Strait are garth's music heros, Garth
likes the stage shows of bands like Queen and Kiss. For the 100osth time
Scott. Scott Hendricks got fired beacuse he was a toal control freak who
would only spend money on himself, , his marketing plan for Fresh Horses
was and i quote "To have this album next to the beatles anthlogy in the
record stores" he wouldnt spend a cent on the album, can you imagine,if a
record company did this to another artist. His marketing plan for
Sevens, (Garths biggest selling ablum internationally)was "The album will
sell itself". Not only should scott had gotten fired he should of been
sued.
Hi Scott in 1990 Garth said "My two heros George Jones and george Strait
deserve this" Thru out 1991 to 1999 Garth has always said that Mr Strait
and MrJones were his heros. When he came to NewZealand in 1994 he also
mentioned Reba and deciated a album to her band members. On larry King
live CNN in 1996, he said he was the right guy at the right place, and he
thought if a country singer would ever had made it big it would of been
george Strait. Garth has always pushed his albums becasue he wants his
music to be heard, and he has never done anything to stop someone else
for pushing thier albums.
Heck if i was a singer i would want to sell as many copies as possible.
I say it once and I say it aagin, ask any garth fan, the reason we buy
his albums is because of the music on the cd.
Well for a start, i would like him to say sorry for calling fresh horses
a dead album. I would also like a better mangement plan than,"well we
will put it next to the beatle anthlogy". I would also like him to say
sorry for garth for the fuss Scott cause over Sevens, when he didnt want
to spend a dime. From what i hear Scott hendicks has a real problem
spending money on artists but no problem spending money on him and the
suits at Capitol.
My main point was that after weeks Scott said and i quote "Fresh Horses
is a dead album". It had sold over 700 thousand in three weeks. For a
head of a record company to say that is pretty sickening. If scott
supported the artists and forgot about himself he would of not been
fired. Fresh Horses was a great album just like Garths other albums.
Yes you are right, im sorry, the web page i was talking about has Beverly
Keel, the negative baised writer i have ever read.
Seriously before Garth, country wasnt that popular , when Garth came
along it bought country to the world (Even little NewZealand) As
TimMcGraw said in an interview in 1996 "We owe so much to Garth, he
opened a lot of doors for a lot of people, the whole industry owes him a
big thank you".
Are you sure you're not confusing Feiler's book with Laurence Leamer's "Three
Chords & The Truth? Feiler's work was anything but trashy. Garth, Wynonna
and Wade Hayes were all involved with the book and at least Wy and Wade praised
it (not sure what Garth's reaction was.) In fact, Chet Flippo, Billboard's
"Nashville Scene" columnist, said:
"Feiler gets into these artists' lives and under their skin, and along the way
he presents a compelling look at the heart of Nashville today and what's
happened to it during the recent go-go years. One of the best books about
country music to appear in years."
If you are referring to the Feiler book, what exactly did you find trashy
about it?
Um, Scott Hendricks is the president of Virgin Records Nashville. I'd hardly
call that unemployed.
-----------------------------------
Kevin Sharp only went gold, and he's no longer with the label. Since Asylum
switched label heads, they've scored two top five albums for the imprint -
Lila's new release and Trio 2.
You don't think its possible that Garth demands so much from Capitol that they
can't give other acts the attention they need? I'm just throwing ideas out
here.
The "Nashville Scene" I'm referring to is a weekly column in Billboard,
currently written by Chet Flippo. It doesn't have it's own webpage. I think
you're talking about a different "Nashville Scene."
They pulled six singles from the damn CD. It sold almost 500,000 the first
week out. Don't you think it's possible that people just didn't like the
songs off the album as much as they liked Garth's older stuff? Let's look at
the singles here:
She's Every Woman
The Fever
The Beaches Of Cheyenne
The Change
It's Midnight Cinderella
That Ol' Wind
"Fresh Horses" wasn't Garth at his best. Maybe they released the wrong
singles. You can't force people to buy CD's. He sold a ton of copies of
"Fresh Horses" through Christmas on the strength of his name. The songs
weren't big enough hits to give the CD longetivity.
