I talked to Cheap Suit Tony Marcus a few days ago. The Cheap
Suits are also playing Strawberry with R. Crumb. At about the
same time, they are playing Berkeley's Freight & Salvage, but
Crumb isn't committed to play that show and Tony doesn't know
yet whether he will. Crumb, the film, is scheduled to be
released somewhere in the same time frame. Tony probably mentioned
the date to me, but it didn't register precisely. I think he
said May or June. Let's hope that Garrison Keillor appreciates
the true historic significance of this event and lets the Cheap
Suits play more than 3 or 4 songs with their founder.
I also asked about getting tickets to the PHQ show. Tony didn't
know about that either. If anybody finds out, I'd really like
to know.
Just to have two Cheap Suits shows in the same year and one
that isn't in the wintertime is somehow special. Definitely
worth a trip to California.

I never heard of the Cheap Suits and I only recently became vaguely aware
of R. Crumb through news magazine coverage of the documentary film. How
about posting some history so that I can appreciate the "true historic
significance" of the reunion?

Do you know when the Strawberry festival falls this year (early Sept, I
imagine.)? I hope I can make it, would be worth it just to hear the cheap
suits.

There is a Strawberry music festival outside the gate to Yosemite
over Labor Day weekend, but the Cheap Suits are playing at the
one on Memorial Day weekend. I'm hoping to go to Sweet's Mill
instead so I won't be there.
For any S.F. Bay Area readers, "Crumb" will be showing in Berkeley CA at
the UC Theatre from May 26 - June 1. It is billed as a "premiere" but at
the UC that usually means it is in close-to-the-beginning-of-first-run.
So, "Crumb" (big winner at recent Sundance Film Festival) may be coming
to an 'art-house' screen near you late May-early June.

Just wanted to let you know that I saw Linda Davis the other night at
Reba's concert in Miami, Fl. She was totally awesome. She and Rhett
Akins also signed autographs after the concert and I got to talk to
her. She also has a fan club at the following address.

Like I said, not old-time but kind of gypsy-jazz-blues-world-music-
cabaret-whackiness of a v. high musical standard and fun quotient.

The documentary "Crumb" was shown in the recent New York Film Festival
(last fall?). It opened this past Friday at the Film Forum, in New York City.
My guess is that "Crumb" will get to perhaps a dozen or two cities, but not
in wide release. In a few years it'll be out on video, shown on cable, and
maybe on PBS.
Since it's possible that this is the best documentary of 1995, it has no
chance winning an Academy Award, or even being nominated.

Don't know what I could offer in return. Heartfelt thanks? Recipes
for faggots? 1001 weird things you can do with synthetic wolf urine?
Tapes of the Viv Stanshall radio shows 'Sir Henry at Rawlinson End'
(which are supposed to be repeated soon)? Copies of Viz (modern day
UK Crumb type stuff)?
E-mail me if you can help

If you are in Dallas, Texas tomorrow night, Terry Zwigoff's
_Crumb_ will be playing at the USA Film Festival. It is
being shown at the AMC Glen Lakes theatre at 9450 N
Central Expressway at 7 PM. I plan on going.
I thought _Crumb_ had already been released to the
general public...? Did you post to rec.arts.movies?

Check out current Village Voice, if you can. Review of CRUMB in film
section. It's out in NYC - don't know about elsewhere . . .

_Crumb_ was a very entertaining film. The theatre was
packed. Zwigoff was in attendence. He says Sony Classics
is distributing the film and that a laserdisk is in the works
that will contain out-takes. He also mentioned that some
footage of Cheap Suits was shot, but didn't turn out well
enough in his and others opinions to use in the film.

A documentary on Crumb and his somewhat unusual family. Reviewed very
favourably be Newsweek, Siskel and Ebert, etc. who said it should have been
nominated for an Academy Award. It should be in general release (or
whatever kind of release such films get) by now. I suspect it missed
most cities (including mine) and will be available some time next year in
the "art" movie houses.

After reading all the messages that relate to R. Crumb, the
relevance of him, the movie, and the reunion to country music still
escapes me. Will someone please clarify this for me? From what I know,
R. Crumb was a famous underground cartoonist in the '60s and '70s, and
the movie is suppose to be a documentary of his life. However, I don't
know how the Cheap Suit Serenaders and a few other names mentioned in the
thread fits into the picture, so please explain those too along with the
historical significance of this reunion. Thanx in advance.
