Hi Joebob,
I hope you will forward this to your Old-time groups. Looks like a
lot of fun. If you want to announce it as a group outing (a bunch
from Marin Irish Ceili and friends and families will be there), please
do.
Angel Island does this Civil War thing every year --- the locale and
time-history-focus sure seem right for all the Irish, Scottish,
Old-time, etc. of the Bay Area to use it as an annual grand ceili.
Thanks!

BAY AREA CEILI
ON ANGEL ISLAND ---
A CIVIL WAR BLAST!
Dates: June 12 & 13, Saturday and Sunday, Angel Island State Park.
Angel Island State Park is calling for all celtic and old-time music
players and groups to add their talents to the "Civil War Days"
artillery battles and reenactment events, on the Island, Saturday June
12 and Sunday June 13.
It is hoped that Bay Area seisiuns, jam groups, pub groups and
individual musicians will declare this an official outing --- a
picnic, a party, A CEILI!
The plan? Just come to the Island either day (or both), alone or
as a group, and join any music you hear. Or stake out a music spot
for your group, and you'll soon have your own appreciative audience.
In the morning, musicians at the dock will welcome arriving
ferries to "1863" (the year Angel Island first arrayed cannons to
deter Confederate gunships.) From 11:00 am musicians may choose to
add old-time flavor to historic Camp Reynolds, where costumed
volunteers will be demonstating army bread-baking, flag signaling,
camp games, tin-punching, rope-making, suttlers store, camp games,
etc. At about 2:00 pm, uniformed Union troops on the shore (facing
the Golden Gate) will trade cannon fire with attacking Rebel gunboats
(Hawaiian Chieftain and Alma). Viewers on the parade ground above
will have a panoramic view of this major artitillery battle and chance
infantry scurmishes. The musicans can serenade brave troops as they
leave the battle field.
A vintage square or line dance is scheduled for 11:30 Saturday,
with Mavis McGaugh, an Angel Island Volunteer, as caller. And a
costumed celtic harpist will grace the parlor of the Civil War
officer's quarters. Marin Irish Ceili will be on-Island for their
picnic ceili celebrating their first season of every Wednesday
sessions in San Rafael.
Period costumes are encouraged. Food, bike rentals, and tour-tram
rides around the Island are available from concessions. Tunes can be
anything Irish, Scottish, or old-time Americana (e.g. "Dixie" ) A
short play list, with music, is available via e-mail.
Weekend ferries leave Tiburon hourly from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm,
with final return 5:20 pm (phone 534-2131) From San Francisco (Pier
39) they leave at 9:45 am, 11:30 am, and 2:00 pm, with final return at
4:40 pm. Alameda and Oakland ferry connections are available through
SF (phone 705-5555.) Fares include the State Park fee.
For details --- or to report your plans --- please contact John
Trimble, Marin Irish Ceili , 415/492-1331; e-mail
