Scientific American, Dec. 2009, p. 62, has an article entitled
"Expanding the Limits of Life," by Alexander S. Bradley, describing a
series of hydrothermal chimneys, similar to the now-famous "black
smokers" of the mid-Atlantic ridge and the Galapagos trench, except
they don't emit black smoke, and they're located about 15 km (9 miles)
west of the ridge. The chimneys are white and up to 200 feet tall, and
they support exotic forms of life different from those of the smokers
on the ridge.

Because of the formations, the investigators named the site Lost City.
So now you know where the New Lost City Ramblers came from.
