Is it just my computer or server, or is the website for The Center for
the Promotion of Contemporary Composers (www.under.org/cpcc)
permanently down/offline? Anyone know?

A single click, and it comes up without any problems. .

It comes up on my computer. There is a selection of 23 fairly
extensive bio's and a large listing of members. I don't know if people
are there to answer the inquires, but the e-mail address on the site
for information is

<sl...@under.org>

Give it a try and see if they answer.

Yes, it's called a thinly veiled advertisement ;-)

Steve, you are too fast to assume the role of the devil advocate. I
prefer to give the original poster the benefit of the doubt, assuming
that he was genuinely asking for help.

If you happen to have any notion that I have any interest whatsoever
in such "advertisement" then you are wrong.

I didn't think you did, but I wasn't as sure about the OP. I'll add that I'm
naturally skeptical (or cynical), especially in this day and age. I figure,
it's better to expect the worst, and be pleasantly surprised, rather than
assume good of people, and be let down.

Anyway, in this type of forum, the OP has every opportunity to respond.
Let's see what happens...

Peace,
Steve

Steve,

As I communicated to you in a private correspondence, my post was not
a thinly veiled advertisement: I am not affiliated with the CPCC in
any way. (Plus, I'm not even that big a fan of the CPCC.) My computer/
server honestly can't connect to the CPCC website (and given that
other people can, now I know the problem is definitely on my end). And
given the fact this is a newsgroup dedicated to composing (and
assuming that readers of this newsgroup are already familiar with the
CPCC and probably frequent its website), I assumed readers of this
group would be open to responding to my query without treating it with
such suspicion. (C'mon, it's not like I'm posting links to
pornography sites!)

How would you feel if everyone started treating your posts with the
same suspicion as you treated mine?

Well Colin,
I can attest that it is a common pastime for a few in this group.
There are some that will actually intentionally look for a way to spin
your post and criticize you for their misquoting of your posts. I
noticed that you had not asked about the quality nor the purpose of
the site. Only that you wanted to test your computer. Something does
seem to be amiss. I am sure, however, that there are some very good
things about a site like that. It would give a composer a place that
he could use for access to his resume as well as many other reasons to
be listed on such a site.

But as to how it feels? Well, I find these sophmoric games and
comments a slightly annoying distraction until they reach the point
that they are outright dishonest and may affect the learning of a
student and then I get angry. Steve, generally, stops before getting
down right dishonest. He thinks he is funnier than he is, but he does
have a sense of humor. Others, ONLY an over sized ego and the
willingness to say anything that they think will make them seem more
than they are. But there are many with good information that are
interested only in sharing it with people that will appreciate their
thoughts. You can also get a perspective from many experts in other
fields that have a strong interest in music. So on balance, this is
one of the better groups that I have found that has both the knowledge
and the exposure to communicate ideas. the Theory and the Compose
groups combined is a vast collection of musicians.

There is a lot of information in this group. If you can sort through
the immaturity and self promotion, you can have access to lots of good
information and opinions.

Hi Colin. Thanks for clarifying. One does often encounter posts similar to
yours where the poster is looking to get hits on a site, rather than
actually having a problem. Good to know there are still good people out
there too :-).

Sorry for any offense. Really just making a wise-crack, that's all.

C'mon, it's not like I'm posting links to
pornography sites!

Well, some compositions I've heard may as well be :-)

They probably already do! Or, if they don't, they should probably consider
doing so!!!

Peace,
Steve
