I'm still converting my CDs to MP3s. I recommend LAME extremely
highly. It really is quite transparent. The flags I use
are
-V 3 --lowpass 13.5 --resample 44.1 -b 80 -F -m s
This gives, roughly, 160-180 kB/sec and the numerical difference
between the original and reconstituted .wav files is essentially

Earlier this evening I went to the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra
performance of "Gruppen". Turnout was surprisingly limited--the venue
was the smaller House of Culture instead of the usual Finlandia Hall,
and even it didn't fill up completely. A number of people even left
after the first half of the programme, featuring music by Schoenberg,

I have the Milstein set on DG. I think it's fine (a pretty
straight-laced reading) but most prefer his earlier set (from the 1950s)
on EMI (which I have not heard).
