The Ghosts of Versailles - a new opera by John Corigliano - is IMHO one
of the most important works by an American composer of the late 20th
century. If anyone has the opportunity to see this opera - particularly
the production mounted by the Metropolitan Opera - just go see it. You
will be delighted. I would be interested to hear anyone's opinion who has
had a chance to hear or see it

I didn't get to see it only hear it. I found a great deal of
it to be very derivative and gimmicky--some of which I'm sure
was more fun to watch in the theatre than to hear on the radio.
As an opera I don't think it is superior to Carlisle Floyd's
Susanah which although it gets an occasional nod from the kids
next door is scertainly a fine enough work that it deserves to
be part of the standard repertory in a house like the Met which
can really throw a great cast at it. In fact it can probably
cast it more easily than some of what it is already doing.
Some of the casting for next year is perilously close to Gran
Scena.

I can't completely agree - the music is well-crafted a bit derivative, and
hardly up to the best that Copland, Sessions, Tower or Carter offer - but
it's a blast to see staged!
