What is the name of the music played in this Memorial chamber?  Who is the
composer?  There was a TV documentary on this several years ago, but I
don't know by whom.  The music is supposed to be very haunting and sad, but
I would like to know about it anyway.

It's a choral arrangement of Robert Schumann's TRAUMEREI from the piano cycle
KINDERSZENEN. Funny that almost seven years after the demise of those hateful
Soviet Hitler-beaters someone still pays attention to these things. No doubt,
in due time some sensitive German millioner or a wealthy American art collector
will buy the mammoth.

Isn't ironic that in a Russian memorial to the victims of WW II, the music
of a German is played?

Well, it was Stalin himself who at the hight of the war proclaimed that
"hitlers come and hitlers go - but Germany stays forever".

Warner,

The music that is played at Mamayev Kurgan is Shuman's "Traumerie" (Dreams).
It is often noted that the people of Volgograd/Stalingrad must not hold too
much of a grudge against Germany since they chose one of the great German
composers to play at this memorial to the WWII battle.
