An articulate discussion about the virtues and
vices of classical music competitions, about
30 min.

http://www.wqxr.org/#!/articles/conducting-business/2012/apr/29/competitions-talent/

First, a talk with Jon Nakamatsu, a Cliburn gold
medalist from 1997, someone whose name is
known, but who didn't become a top or well-
publicized name 10 or so years after the fact,...
(relatively speaking). He has a pretty good attitude,
or so it seems... says he owes his career to his
win, and still performs much today, plus makes
the occasional recording.

Then there's a roundtable with some of our
memorable commentators, Kaplinsky, asked
point blank about judging one's own students,
Norman Lebrecht, who seems to heartily dislike
competitions, and Susan Elliott, who is
researching and writing a report about the
topic.

The criticism of the past 'Soviet' system,
seems excessive and worse than I've
heard, but... don't know.
