JOHANNES BRAHMS: Variations on a Theme by Haydn
FRANZ LISZT: Les
Préludes
GEORGES BIZET: Carmen Suite - Ten Orchestral
Excerpts
Philadelphia Orchestra, Eugene Ormandy, conductor
The
Brahms and Liszt were tranferred from a quite rare 1949 Columbia 10" LP with
exceptional dynamic range for that time with "muscular" low end and no fake
reverb added. (That intrusive effect was to come later for Columbia's
Academy of Music recordings). The Bizet Carmen Suite although a monophonic
recording, was issued ten years later and recorded in the reverberant Broadwood
Hotel Ballroom in Philadephia. All is vintage Ormandy and the solo work is what
one can expect from the Philadelphia Orchestra first chair players.
A must have CD!
ROY HARRIS: Sonata for
Violin and Piano (1947)
Josef Gingold, violin; Johana Harris, piano
ROBERT
PALMER: Quartet for Piano and Strings (1942)
John Kirkpatrick, piano with
Members of the Walden Quartet
Two highly enjoyable chamber works with
top notch players. These two works do not deserve to be neglected any
longer. Josef Gingold was was teacher of many notalbe violinists
including Isaac Stern. Both recording were done very well and a near mint
Columbia pressing was given to us for transfer tp
