Any suggestions for a great performance with better sound?

Surprisingly enough Sinopoli with the Dresden Staatskapelle on DG. Or
haitink and the VPO on Philips. Which version is the Celi BTW, 1889?
Pah!

Harnoncourt and Inbal, both on Teldec, should be sought out. The Inbal
is a must own, because he uses a different performing version.

Bohm/VPO on Decca/London. I got it on a Decca import, and noticed
recently that the #3 and #4 are now a 2CD set (midpriced) in Europe.
Presumably that will happen here in time.

Deryk,
Thanks for the reply. There are no real liner notes on this recording. It
is live, and was recorded in Stuttgart in 1981. There are not even movement
timings on the liner. It sounds like it was probably recorded as a
broadcast. I do not know enough about #3 to say which edition it is.

The Celi Bruckner 3 on Exclusive sounds like the 1889 edition to me.
It's certainly not the 1873 (?) edition that Inbal uses.
Deryk,
Thanks for the recommendations. I picked up the Haitink last night (I
always did like Haitinks Bruckner), and will let you know if these two are
the same version. I think there is another reply on here from Tony Movshon,
who thinks it is the 1889 edition.

I was also fond of a Haitink/Concertgebouw recording that I have on LP.
Don't know if it was ever reissued on CD.

For the 1877 version, I'd suggest Sinopoli. Haitink is also good,
although you should be sure to plug your ears near the end to skip over
the extra bars Haitink added. I also like Sanderling's performance of
the 1890 edition. I actually like the new tunes in that version. And
also go for Inbal to hear Bruckner's original thoughts.

Haitink has always been a partisan for the 1877 version. His was the first
recording ever (1963) for Philips, with the Concertgebouw, of the Oesser
edition of 1877. This has now been released in the Philips box of the 10
symphonies. His newer recording with the Vienna Philharmonic, also for
Philips but DDD, uses the Nowak edition of 1877, including the "optional"
coda to the Scherzo. This version is the same that Sinopoli uses for his DG
recording from Dresden.

I have it. I can understand why it got bad reviews.
Personally, the Inbal performance is the one I much perfer.

Don't know if these are on CD or not. Bohm (DG) , Jochum (DG or EMI),
Haitink ((Phillips, because he uses a different version)
