HAPPY BIRTHDAY RICHARD WAGNER
I can say no better than the great Conrad L. Osborne - " one does not have to succumb to a mystic to appreciate the richness and profundity of these operas. They come from the supremely poetic imagination of a composer and dramatist who still excites unquestioning reverence and irrational animosity , and whose work is... more »

Tennstedt live Mahler recordings from master tapes
As far as I can see these are the only Mahler recordings on CD that are from master tapes, rather than from someone's recording of a radio broadcast: - EMI Symphonies 5, 6 and 7 all included in the lastest version of the complete Tennstedt cycle from EMI. Symphony 2 on LPO label Symphony 3 on ICA label... more »

Harold Shapero RIP
The NYT obit gives lots of space to the Symphony for Classical Orchestra recorded by Bernstein in 1953 and Previn in 1986. I recall his sonatas for piano were well-regarded in academic piano land. [link] eo-classical-composer-dies.htm l?_r=0... more »

AFP interview with Gottfried Wagner: 'I saw him as a threat'
Fascinating interview. Gottfried Wagner, the rebellious great- grandson, said in his 1977 autobiography that 27 rolls of private home movies of Hitler and the Wagner family are still under lock and key. Have they ever been released? From Norman Lebrecht's Slipped Disc blog: << Extracts from Gottfried Wagner’s Agence France-Presse (AFP)... more »

Early Tocanini vs. Late Toscanini
Agree/disagree with Haggin's description?: Early T.(NY Philharmonic years) = Relaxed, expansive, articulating and organizing and shaping the substance of a piece with much elasticity of tempo, and molding the phrase with a great deal of sharp inflection, Late T.(NBC Symphony years) = Simpler, tauter, swifter, setting a... more »

Orchestral sound: tonal sumptuousness and splendor vs. refinement and subtlety of orchestral color vs. radiance, transparency and sharpness of definition.
Which do you prefer? (the following is from Haggin's "New Listener's Companion...(1971): - ...the Philadelphia Orchestra's tonal sumptuousness and splendor, the Boston Symphony's refinement and subtlety of orchestral color, the New York Philharmonic's radiance, transparency and sharpness of definition.... more »

Cádiz (Chueca) on Deutsche Grammophon CD
We've waited a long time for this keystone of 19th century zarzuela to be given a studio recording, but the excellent, new and complete DG set has been worth the wait. You can read my review (linked from zarzuela.net's front page) from here, along of course with much else of possible interest to 'zarzueleros':... more »

New Janet Baker reissue - excellent news
I know I'm not alone in awaiting the CD reissue of more of Dame Janet's recorded artistry - even though this 20 CD box duplicates much that has been available, it appears (based on the tracklisting at the EMI website) to fill many important gaps, including the single Schubert song omitted from prior reissues of the 2 LP set of lieder she recorded with Gerald Moore; it also has the contents of her 'Favourite Encores' and 'Songs for Sunday'LPs as well as the duet recitals with Fischer Dieskau.... more »
