Do I remember this story right? At Nixon's first inauguration, Van Cliburn
took the stage while Nixon's Quaker grandmother chided the new president, "If
Thee had practiced more, Thee would be down there instead of up here!"

To write to me, do for my address what Androcles did for the lion
Tom Deacon is a liar and a scoundrel who cannot hold on to a job.
All the pity Nixon did not obey his Grandmama.

But it's a good thing that Balint Vazsonyi lost that election for mayor of
Bloomington, Indiana.

Thanks for the surprising background , Wayne.
Not the first time the Cliburn Foundation has fooled, and
disappointed, me.Nor the first time a prominent Texan has, either. I
still fondly recall the live radio stream of the "real" 2005
Competition, on the TCU fm station, being bumped for Horned Frogs
baseball games,even though NCAA finals.

there's an interesting discussion about the fact that Levin wasn't awarded
first prize, some people suggesting that it happened because of his pro
background, and in that case, wether he should or not have entered the
competition.

being a conservatory graduate doesn't make you a pro. there are many
graduates who, after maybe one or two public recitals, give up with the
piano and make their living in a different way. should they be considered
professionals? imho, it's only a matter of making it clear what 'amateur'
means in this context. you can not expect a person without a regular
training to play the Diabelli Vars :)
bye, mr duffy
I missed that info, so my apologies to the Cliburn in this instance,
but then the Competition should be re-titled or have a "Warning" label
attached.
