Toshiba will issue 9 CDs featuring the conducting of Constantin
Silvestri at the end of July this year.
They are cheap (ny Japanese standards - list 999 yen) because thet are
short (reissues of original LP contents, likely original covers too).
I think all of these were issued as LPs in 2009. And I would not be
surprised if the sound is considerably better than the European
reissues that have been so hard to get for so long.
If you're a Silvestri addict (I confess I am one) and you never got
the DISKY box or the Royal Tchaikovsky late Sym. tryptich, this may be
you best chance for a while to get some of these classics:

http://www.hmv.co.jp/en/product/detail/5030368 - Dvorak Sym # 9
(Orchestre National de Radio France 1956)

http://www.hmv.co.jp/en/product/detail/5030366 - Dvorak Sym # 7 (VPO
1960)

http://www.hmv.co.jp/en/product/detail/5030364 - Tchaikovsky Sym # 5 &
Borodin Pol. Dances (Philharmonia 1957)

http://www.hmv.co.jp/en/product/detail/5030363 - Tchaikovsky Sym # 4 &
Glinka Over (Philharmonia 1957)

http://www.hmv.co.jp/en/product/detail/5030365 - Tchaikovsky Sym # 6 &
Rimsky May Night Over (Philharmonia 1957)

http://www.hmv.co.jp/en/product/detail/5030367 - Dvorak Sym # 8 &
Carnival Over (LPO 1956)

http://www.hmv.co.jp/en/product/detail/5030334 - Tchaikovsky Vn Conc.
w. Kogan (Paris Cons. 1959)

http://www.hmv.co.jp/en/product/detail/5030336 - Mendelssohn Vn Conc.
& Mozart Vn Conc. # 3 w. Kogan (Paris Cons. 1959)

http://www.hmv.co.jp/en/product/detail/5030335 - Beethoven Vn Conc. w.
Kogan (Paris Cons. 1959)

I also today ordered the following King (Japan) reissue of Silestri
with the NHK Orchestra

http://www.hmv.co.jp/en/product/detail/4994394 - Dvorak Sym #
9;Tchaikovsky Sym # 4; Rimsky K. Cap. Esp.;Enesco Rom. Rhap.;Alfven
Swedish Rhap.

All available in EMI studio recordings.

Like I said, I'm a bit of a Silvestri addict.

I suppose this brings the price of each to about $10.00 plus shipping.
I own the other CD issues, including the large capbox of Silvestri
recordings. Must check and see if anything has been left out there or
here.

There's lots of stuff in the DISKY box that's not part of this batch.
What's not in the box are the Tchaik 4-5-6.
That was available on another EMI label, "Royal Long Players" , Amazon
ASIN B0000508FJ ( http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0000508FJ ), never issued
in USA.

Yes, as I said, I have that issue.

It seems that Royal Long Players is actually an imprint of Disky. I
wonder why they didn't include those Tchaikovsky symphonies when they
made the big box.

I don't believe the Dvorak 9 is in the Disky box.

Correct.
Means I'll get 2 recordings of Silvestri in the New World Sym once
these 9 CDs are out (I get one with the NHK set)

Besides the NHK recordings, the Dvorak 9 is the only one I don't have. I'll
look forward to any comparison for recording quality of these vs. earlier
releases.

I can already predict that the person who has forked over 150 dollars
to have these CDs shipped stateside will want to justify his or her
purchase by talking about veils being lifted, Frank. You can put money
on it.

The Japanese rarely have access to mastertapes and as these are budget
issues they will use what they can get, which is the transfers EMI did
for Disky, a wholly owned subsidiary of EMI, as we know. The idea that
a 10 buck superbudget issue will be a remastering using the latest
technology is some kind of kinky fantasy. Best to order only what is
missing from the existing sets IF you own them.

I plan to get the Dvorak #9 and maybe one or two others to see if they
are improved. But all will depend on when there's enough other
material to justify an order with shared the shipping expense.

I have the Disky box and the Royal Long Players Tchaikovsky symphonies
(including that strange articulation of the 1st movement fanfare in #4),
but also the Constantin Silvestri Artist Profile two-fer. The contents
of that issue duplicate some of those in both the Disky and RLP issues,
with one exception: the fabulous Elgar 'In The South', which for some
reason didn't make it into the Disky box set. This is a performance that
should never be allowed to go out of print, yet that appears to be the
case currently. Shame on EMI.

Totally agree Bob.
I have it on an EMI two-fer with other Elgar recordings, so I don't
get the duplicates.

I didn't know you were a author until I saw your new book on a

Can you tell me why someone would be a Silvestri addict?
I think I have 1 or 2 of his recordings (one of them 'being' a Manfred).
What's special about his recordings?

I confess I was unaware of this issue. I'll have to trade in the
'Artists Profile set and get it.

I wish :) Alas, by age is greater, and my avoirdupois rather higher than

Translation programs do a decent job converting European languages to
English, but are still hopeless when it comes to Japanese (and other
Asian languages, for all I know). I suspect, however, that in a few
years things will have changed.
