The Talich Quartet playing Dvorak, Mozart, Smetana, Schubert, Haydn and
Beethoven on a two disc Calliope set (I have all the pieces; are these
exceptional recordings?).
Palestrina performed by Pro Cantione Antiqua/Brown on Carlton Classics.
Fibich symphonies by Detroit/Jarvi on Chandos (I don't know these pieces
at all).
Walton, including Belshazzar's Feast and Symphony #1, by Scottish
NO/Gibson on Chandos.
Any suggestions on modern music available on the New World label? I'm
open to anything you consider worthwhile.
Is the Barber Piano Concerto by Ruskin/MIT Sym/Epstein on Turnabout
(coupled with Gerswhin Concerto in F) a worthwhile performance?
Anything else in the catalog you'd recommend?
Thanks in advance for your insight -- and for the many enlightening
responses which have benefitted me in the past.

Fine-sounding performances of not terribly interesting music. Anyone
who tells you that Fibich is another Dvorak needs his or her ears
examined, IMO. I've tried hard with Fibich's 3 symphonies, but none of
them ever leaves a lasting impression on me.

I don't know if BRO has it, but the disc with Persichetti's Piano
Concerto is superb. Ditto the ones with Paine's two symphonies -
unlike Fibich, Paine had something to say, and the Mehta/NYPO
performances are unlikely to be bettered in our lifetimes.

Pretty bad, as I recall from the LP era. However, that Katims-led
Dohnanyi disc on Turnabout is a great bargain if BRO still has it at
$2.99.

>Looking through the recently-arrived Catalog #76 (with the lovely

>The Talich Quartet playing Dvorak, Mozart, Smetana, Schubert, Haydn and

I didn't like their Mozart Quintets.
>Palestrina performed by Pro Cantione Antiqua/Brown on Carlton Classics.
This is probably the same as the IMP recording that I have. This is a good
performance by a smallish all-male group in a large acoustic space. A good
supplement to the Tallis Scholars.

A good Belshazzar's Feast. I haven't heard the Symphony (my copy is coupled
with a cello work.)

Ussachevsky's electronic music is interesting.

I have them and enjoy them. #1 is not as engaging as #2 or #3, but they
are tuneful and enjoyable (to paraphrase Paul Goldstein, he's no Dvorak,
but so what?)

Likewise have them and enjoy them. Worth acquiring even at full price.
Fibich has his charms; he may not be in the same block as Dvorak, but he
lives on the same street.

There is lots of other interesting looking stuff in the Supraphon catalog
that I haven't heard. The Panocha Quartet's Dvorak and Schubert for
instance.

Yes, including the disc of David Bintley's choreography for Simon Jeffes'
STILL LIFE AT THE PENGUIN CAFE, a wonderful piece, brilliantly performed by
the Royal Ballet. I cannot recommend this highly enough.
