As a part of the on-going settlement of the Estate of Denise Restout, "Oak
Knoll," the house in Lakeville, Connecticut, in which Wanda Landowska lived for

the last ten years of her life (1949 - 1959), is being offered for sale. "Oak
Knoll" is the house in which all of Landowska's RCA Victor recordings,
beginning with Preludes and Fugues 9 through 16 from Book One of The
Well-Tempered
Clavier, were made.

Here is a hyperlink to the property description at the website of Elyse
Harney, the real estate broker who has the exclusive listing for the property:

Elyse Harney Real Estate - Oak Knoll - The Home of Wanda Landowska

In case that link does not work for some reason, here is the URL for the page
at the Elyse Harney website that displays the listing:

http://www.harneyre.com/thisProperty.asp?PropID=753

The asking price for "Oak Knoll," which is about 100 years old, takes into
account the reality that this historic dwelling, rich in history, legend, and
magnificent panelling, urgently needs a substantial amount of restoration as
well as the complete updating of the electrical, heating, and plumbing systems.

I don't know.

A parlour entirely done in bird's eye maple sounds *rather* nice. The price
is cheap, I think.

I cannot imagine living under the same
roof with the ghots of a harpsichordist.

I might as well move to Canterville.

It's really good you don't get into music, you know. It isn't at all like
skiing.

You're wrong.

My glissandi are better than

No, not really.

Try her K576 and then see if you can find any other pianist who comes close
to her sense of infectious rhythm and colour.

Michelowski (sp?)

I don't agree that Landowska played the piano poorly. I recently
listened to a set of Mozart Sonatas she did in the 50s - although not
my first choice for this music, I was really amazed at her seemless
legato and absolute control - she produced a beautiful sound, never
harsh. Perhaps too small scaled, but impressive none the less.

What I would like to know is where will Landowska's 2 Pleyel
harpsichords go? If anyone from the Landowska estate is reading
this....Can I have one of them? Thanks :)

Are there more keyboard players who played the "other" instrument badly
than those who excelled at both? Why?

The instruments are different, and piano playing
(and in fact any kind of music performance) relies
a lot on muscle memory. The difference between the
piano and the harpsichord is like the difference
between skiing and skating. Once can practice
both, but one is not likely to be an olympic
champion in both.

Art and sports are different. One may achieve high art in both instruments
plus the organ.

Spoken like a true literalist. Is there a
shortage of smileys in Milwaukee?

More important, are your plucksichord and
organ skills equally as developed as your
piano playing? Are any of them as developed
as your posting skills?

Many years ago a friedn and I spent an afternoon with Denise Restout at the
Landowska house. We were shown the instruments, as I recall at least five of
them. when my friend pressed one key he was reprimanded by Restout who told
him that the instruments are silent now. I thought, "What a terrible way to
remember a great musician!"

Do harpsichords have the same mystique as violins, that the must be played
to keep in condition, and tone suffers if they are not?

Actually Landowska's harpsichords didn't play because Miss Restout
didn't keep them is top condition. (This info comes from a student of
hers). She tuned them perfectly but didn't put the resources into
replacing the plectra when they broke.
