Norodom Sihanouk, variously King, Prince, Prime Minister, Puppet Ruler, and
probably also Chief Cook and Bottle Washer, of Cambodia or Kampuchea or what-
have-you, has passed away at the age of 89. In between bouts of wheeling and
dealing, jockeying for power, chasing dames, and self-serving diplomacy, he
found a bit of time to compose, including a seven-minute-long piece of fluff
called (wait for it) "Cambodian Suite," which was recorded by none other than
André Kostelanetz on a Columbia LP. The other fluff on the album included
Ferde Grofé's "Hudson River Suite" (one of his better efforts, IMAO), a
snippet from Falla's "La vida breve," and a few other bits and pieces.

The Columbia LP has been remastered by Naxos, although of course it is not
available in the "Land of the Brave, and the Home of the Free":

Ah, yes. I remember the listing in the Schwann LP catalogue for
music by Norodom Sihanouk, King of Cambodia, and thought it was
intriguing, but never bought the record. Then I saw a listing for the
Columbia LP from Dave Canfield or Leslie Gerber a decade or so ago and
got it. It's fluff indeed, but interesting in that it could go with
music by Louis XIII, Frederick the Great, Henry VIII, the conducting
on records by the King of Denmark, and so on.

Isn't Grofe's Hudson River Suite the one that features the sound of
a bowling ball rolling and knocking down pins? The Columbia LP has a
photo of Kostelanetz twirling on a bowling lane on a stage while
musicians watch in amusement.

Thanks for a memory.

Oh, Fwedewick IX's "Eroica" is not bad at all, really.

It's been maybe forty years since I last saw the copy I heard, but I do

"Remastered"? That probably consisted of blowing the dust off LP(s)
found in used record stored and hastily transferring the unlicensed
material to CD/downloads.

I just got this (MP3 download, $3.99) from "The Home of the Free" so
let's dispel that myth that there are CDs or downloads unattainable
here in the U.S. It's getting tired to hear that over and over again
when we know it is not true.

Considering all the music Mr. de Mena owns, I think the barrier he might
consider having in place is called shelf space. :-)

The Grofe Suite can be heard on You Tube in another recording
(Stromberg / Bournemouth Symphony) so it's probably only a matter of
time before the Cambodian Suite is on there too ...

The Cambodian Suite is not by Grofé; it is by the recently-deceased person
mentioned in the subject line.

Apologies; I obviously misread your reply.

I'm kind of fond of some of Grofé's suites, even the one that is arrant
junk -- his "World's Fair Suite" from 1964.

I usually head straight off to You Tube to find something I've just
heard about, but don't already know, and although the "World's Fair
Suite" isn't there, Grofe's "Hollywood Suite" is ... and great fun it
is too. Now why isn't this piece better known? ...

Seems like something Naxos would do, a multi-volume edition of Grofe's
orchestral music, like they did with Leroy Anderson.

Lots to include:
