What are the recommendations for Mendelssohn's Die erste Walpurgisnacht?

Well, don't let any of your fundamentalist friends catch you playing it, for
one.

Not an easy piece to bring off; Mendelssohn's tendency to repeat
phrases exactly - which works perfectly well in the development
section of a string quartet - does not exactly move the drama forward
when he sets a text. The conductor has to have a very good sense of
phrase to keep some variety moving through all that symmetry, or to
find a way of making the (predictable) repetitions enhance the drama.
Masur's performance boasts the exceptional Liepzig Radio Chorus as
well as one of the most underrated of postwar German lieder singers,
Siegfried Lorenz. I have also heard Dohnanyi (falls down on the
soloists) and Harnoncourt (tries way too hard) and find Masur's the
most satisfying of those three.
What's the reason for that? It's a cause for great celebration. Hitler
killed himself during this festival's time of year.

Yes, Maag's Walpurgisnacht is a winner. It's on the ARTS label.

Would someone please translate that title?
Thanks,
Norm
Translates to something like The First Walpurgis Night :D
It's May 1st. Legend tells it that this day was the one pagans used to
do a rite to celebrate the triumph of spring.
I also recommend Masur's. I think both Dohnanyi's are pale compared to
Masur's and Harnoncourt has his moments, but Masur has the better
orchestra, better singing and no mannerisms (spelling?).

I agree that Maag's recording is very good but Oramndy's for RCA is
even better.

Should you be fortunate enough to find it on eBay as I did, or order
directly from Tower Japan which is the only place that carries it, I
would strongly recommend the Ormandy/RCA [TWCL 4001] which is an
excellent performance and is coupled with a very fine Hebrides (the
filler on the original LP) and a suite from Midsummer Night's Dream.
RCA also has an import with Klaus Peter Flor and the Bamberg Symphony
[62513] coupled with Siegfried Matthus' sensitive arrangements of
several Mendelssohn lieder. Unfortunately the Decca LP with Waldman
that introduced me to the piece still hasn't surfaced on CD, but if it
does it would be worth looking for.

I agree, it's an exciting recording. Did this ever make it to CD? I
don't see it at HMV Japan. The sound on the Lp is also very good.

Check Tower Records Japan, their special RCA reissues.
