It is a Marco Polo from a 4-5 years ago. This contains a collection
of the orchetsral music of Louis Aubert. This music is NOT of the
frothy Les Six category. If anything it leans towards Ravel and Schmitt.
The star track on this disc is the tone poem Le Tombeau de
Chateaubriand. This unpromising title hides a tone poem of fresh
Atlantic grandeur and magic. Much of it uncannily catches the feeling
of sailing in a brisk breeze with the sea glittering in the sun. One
section for me calls up the picture of a penant suddenly fluttering
free in the wind. A remarkable imagination and inspiration from this
Breton composer clearly deeply influenced by the Atlantic seaboard of
his homeland coast.
I recommend this CD very strongly even if that were the only track on the disc.
If you enjoy Tintagel or the Moeran symphony, La Mer or any one of
the vivid sea pictures then try this piece.
I can provide catalogue number if you wd like details.

WONDERFUL! There are so MANY things on M-P that I have purchased,
auditioned, and then traded away, that I am extremely glad to get a
very specific review and recommendation, so that I can be assured I
will enjoy an obscure item! I have looked at the Aubert disk, and put
it back several times, turning to other fare that I knew about for
sure. Now, I will be out another fifteen bucks for certain.
Another related M-P: how is the Cowen Sym 3 on M-P 8.223273? I recall
reading in "'My Own Trumpet" that Boult was underwhealmed. I might
like even minor British music, but a fussy friend tells me that the Cz
State PO is extremely ratty sounding and crude, more so than in other
performances by the ensemble on M-P and Naxos. Now, my friend is
notoriously fussy: is he right? Should one wait for Rosemary Brown to
psychically retrieve the 1880 St. James Hall premiere, or start
importuning Bamert to have a go?
Yours,

Sad to say your friend is right about the Marco Polo Cowen symphony.
I have played it once - maybe twice - it all seemed terribly drab and
uninspiring. Sound was OK. Not sure if it was the music or the
performance or both which created the impression. Better reserve
judgement on Cowen. What with the Macfarren symphonies being recorded
complete by CPO it seems not impossible that we will have all seven
Cowens before 2010 if I make it to that date and can afford to listen to them.
Just in case anyone is interested. Cowen syms:-
Symphony No. 1 in C minor (1869, St James' Hall, 1869);
Symphony No. 2 in F major (1872);
Symphony No. 3 in C minor, The Scandinavian (1880, Saint James Hall,
cond. composer, 1887, Bournemouth March 1900);
Symphony No. 4 in B flat minor, The Welsh (1884, RPS, 28.5.1884,
Bournemouth January 1897);
Symphony No. 5 in F (1887, Cambridge University Music Society,
conducted by Stanford, 1887);
Symphony No. 6 in E The Idyllic (1897, Richter Concerts 1897,
Bournemouth April 1907)
