Hi,

I just received the Yo-Yo Ma big box of 90 CDs from Amazon France, at a
cost of about $320 including air post. That is about 1/3 of the USA list
price. All the CDs are there, and the large booklet, as well as a serial
number. All that seems to be missing are the autographed photographs,
and perhaps a DVD.

Inasmuch as the set is now discontinued in the USA, this might be a good
source for obtaining this set.

Good listening,

Morton Linder

Now that you have parted with your cold cash, and a lot of it, perhaps
you could tell us WHY one would buy such a box. Is Yo Yo Ma giving up
the cello? Not making any more recordings?

Isn't this kind of box more suitable when the artist is dead and they
can collect ALL of his recordings?

Apparently they can charge a lot more while the artist is still alive
and performing.

Whatever floats your boat. I find nothing particularly appealing about
Ma's playing. Technically, he's way down the list when compared to
others. But again, if you like it, enjoy! That's why there are so many
different recordings.

It doesn't include the Finzi Concerto (recorded for Lyrita), does it?

This set is not discontinued in the USA. It is also not three times
the price you paid. It's $634 at Amazon.

Hi Steve,

I wrote "list price". I must say that a savings of $300.- is still a
nice amount.

I know Yo-Yo and his sister for 30 years, and feel that paying $3.50 per
CD is a small sum indeed. There are of course other fine cellists on the
scene, and I attend their recitals and purchase their CDs also.

Good listening,

No, nor does it include the H.v.K. Beethoven Triple concerto recorded
for DG. It is a Sony box of Sony recordings.

Still not sure with your medical degree and published medical papers,
and speaking 5 languages, you could make mistakes like these. Even 3
years later this set is still in print in the U.S. Somehow I am sure
this is my fault that I corrected your post on the subject

And still about three times what Sony ought to be asking for this set.

I suppose that if it has a brain, you can lie to it.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your reply. I did not make a mistake. I read in a music
magazine that the set was discontinued, so the magazine made the
mistake. In any event, inasmuch as I had already ordered it from abroad
at half the price, I had no need to follow up that topic.

Regardless of such facts, when a person posts a request for help, isn't
it the decent thing to do, to try and help him? When help has already
been given by another poster, why do you delight in belittling someone's
lack of computer technique?

Basta, genug, enough already.

Regards,

Mort

Could you please elaborate on his technical shortcomings? I've seen him 8 times, (although maybe the Silk Road show I saw shouldn't count for purposes of this discussion) and I've never seen him struggle. I've never seen him have a "pitchy" night. I've never seen him out of control. I've never seen him give a "let's get this over with," performance. The only time I was disappointed with a performance was an Elgar Concerto with Barenboim which seemed to take 45 minutes, and I blamed Barenboim for that.
Is there a problem with his left hand dexterity? Is his vibrato one of those one-size-fits-all vibratos, always the same no matter the moment? Is his bow arm incapable of articulation clean enough or smooth enough. Can he not pull enough sound? Is there some piece which he cannot adequately characterize?
Perhaps you could name all the cellists higher up the list than he technically.
Or maybe you could name some recordings where comparative listening will demonstrate your point.
Frankly,

I concur. I saw Ma play the Dvorak in 2010, still the only time I've
heard it in concert, at a 'gala' in St. Louis with David Robertson
conducting. Yes, it was a tried-and-true heart-on-sleeve Romantic
reading — sentimental to a fault at times, perhaps — but what amazing
playing! Not on autopilot, or 'calling it in' — this was a gala and he
gave his all. Only a bitter peon would protest such musicality. No
technical shortcomings that I could discern. Ma and Co. brought down
the house. Sure, his star power helped, but it was vigorously and
artistically achieved. P.S. I was in the balcony at Powell Hall. No
problems with sound.

I think it is called 'occupational disability'.

I am sorry, but I never heard any "technical shortcomings" in Yo-Yo's
playing, and I have seen him live dozens of times in all sorts of
material. I also have most of his recordings, including the big box.

Right on. I'm really looking forward to hearing all those cellists with techniques so superior to his that they put him far down a list of the best technicians.

Thanks for the reinforcement. What were your impressions of Robertson and the orchestra? I don't like him at all from the audience, (only seen him guest-conduct in Chicago) but my impression is the orchestra likes him and plays well for him.

Amazon.fr is asking 540 for this cubic cow. I'm quite glad I got it
last September for under 140.
