Based on some excerpts I heard i was thinking of getting this
recording but I have read some reservations about the sound. It was
the RCA release I auditioned. But some posters said there were other
transfers with better sound (Japan). Can anyone confirm or does it
really make that much of a difference - the excerpts I heard were very
tubby sounding but acceptable.

just listened somne more.. the problem is not the recording which is
clear enuf, it is the piano which a times sounds pretty bad.........
BTW- Richter's playing is far from impressive. When did he record
this...... at times uneven articularion.

A better performance than the RCA, and one including both Books I and
II, is this one:
Innsbrück, 26 - 28 July; 7, 10 August 1973) on Poloarts [China]
CL4B-86080 (CD) It's not easy to find these days but shows up
occasionally on eBay. I personally don't care for either the sound or
the performance on the RCA and both are better on the Poloarts. For
just Book I the Moscow performance 20 and 21 April, 1969, recently re-
released and discussed here a month or two ago, is the one to get.

You want the one released by Sony in 2009 and transferred by Yukio
Takahashi. See my post 72 and others in this thread:

http://tinyurl.com/87fnjsz

As noted on other occasions, the LPs and the earlier CD transfer sounded
radically different, the LPs having a fairly mellow sound that portrays
Richter's work very differently. I can't imagine that those early CDs
have the sound he wanted.

The 2009 transfer is much more like the LPs (meaning the European and
Russian Melodiya LPs; there were some MHS issues that sounded bad).

The 2009 issue, btw, is from Europe, not Japan, and it's easy to find.
You'll see some Amazon links in the above thread. The Takahashi
transfers may or may not have been used in Japan-only issues. There are
recent Melodiya issues too; I have no idea what transfers.

There is also another complete WTC recorded in Innsbruck, which has been
reissued on PoloArts; earlier it was out on JVC. Some people prefer it.
I don't, although I like it. The PoloArts is sometimes on eBay (not now)
-- the release is from some place like Korea.

Have to ask: have you heard the LPs? Or the Takahashi transfer? If not,
you're not in a position to judge the sound of the erstwhile RCA.

For what it's worth, I had the same bad reaction to the RCA/BMG
transfer, which is muddy, nasty sounding and very uninviting. I'm
quite tolerant about sound quality and have heard (and even enjoyed)
numerous Richter recordings that sound as if they were recorded on a
boombox in a railway station men's room, but the WTC was too much even
for me. I don't really obsess about transfers to the extent that some
do here, but Steve Emerson insisted that I'd be pleasantly surprised
and I ordered these last year. The difference is incredible --- I
can't imagine what went wrong with the earlier transfer. Not only is
this now one of my favorite piano WTCs, it's one of the best-sounding
Richter recordings I've ever encountered. And the price is right.

Just to be clear, here is the issue I recommend:

http://www.amazon.com/Bach-J-S-Das-Wohltemperierte-Klavier/dp/B002K8BJS2/ref=sr_1_36?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1337879528&sr=1-36

And here are the one(s)s to avoid like the plague:

http://www.amazon.com/Bach-Well-Tempered-Clavier-Sviatoslav-Richter/dp/B000026OHN/ref=sr_1_sc_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1337879507&sr=1-1-spell

http://www.amazon.com/Bach-Well-Tempered-Clavier-Book-I/dp/B0002VYDY6/ref=sr_1_sc_3?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1337879507&sr=1-3-spell

So, yes, I've done an A/B comparison and this is not a minor
improvement we're talking about here, it's like night and day. I
haven't heard the other transfers that have been mentioned.

I thought the Innsbrück was pretty similar to the RCA in terms of
performance. But I could well have missed something -- if you can
point to a bit where the performance is better I'd be interested.

By the way, anyone interested in WTC on piano would do well to check
Rubsam's selections from Bk1 on Naxos. I enjoy what he does much more
than Richter.

I do, --- the AoF especially and quite a bit of CU3 and some of the
Leipzig Chorales. The more I listen to the trio sonatas the more I
enjoy them.

I think that his WTC selections are really poetic -- by comparison
Richter's WTC seems a bit too dry. It's as if Richter was trying to
avoid playing the music too romantically, quite understandably. But in
doing so he sometimes swung too far in the direction of the
workmanlike and routine. He never found a third way between
romanticism and modernism.

Having said that I've certainly enjoyed Richter in the second half of
book 2. And in the B minor of Book 1 you can hear some real genius I
think.

Rubsam's partitas are fine too, at least to my way of thinking.
Listen for example, Partita 6 or to the allemande of Partita 4. As
far as I hear, no one comes close for emotional depth on piano, while
avoiding killing the music by beautifying it -- except perhaps Tureck
in her Great Pianists recording of the partitas.

In January 2008, I bought Victor VICC60601 at the Tokyo HMV. Have you
heard it? Is it just a repackage of the 90's RCA transfer?

See Maready's post for a good description of the RCA vs the Sony.

If the piano sound on yours seems anything like normal, if it would
never occur to you to call it brash or nasty, you probably don't have
the RCA.

I got rid of the latter but I'll try to see about posting a FLAC from
the Sony if you're interested.

You could be right.

I don’t have the RCA – I didn’t keep the old bad transfer and when I
listen to his WTC I always go for Innsbruck). But I did just look the
Innsbruck and RCA in the B minor of Book 1 (spotify have uploaded the
new transfer of Bool 1) and in terms of elapsed time, it’s 7.52 + 7.33
on RCA, while the Innsbruck is 14 .51. So the RCA looks like it’s
half a minute longer.

I wonder if that time gain is mostly in the fugue. I do recall, years
ago, comparing the two versions in that final prelude and fugue and
preferring the RCA, because it was so rapt.

I haven’t got time to explore this much over the next couple of weeks
as I’m travelling, but I’ll be keen to pick it up again when I get
back to London.

Actually, it is a CHINESE release. The sound and presentation are inferior to the Victor release, which was pretty much immediately discontinued due to some sort of legal issues. Sadly, it is another example of copyright infringement, despite it supposedly being authorized by Victor. Different recordings. Not worth the trouble.

My impression was that Richter, or was it the estate, vetoed the
release. So you're certain PoloArts didn't simply copy the JVC issue of
the Innsbruck material?

I guess it depends on how badly people want to hear the Innsbruck. It
was certainly worth the trouble I went to, just ordering off eBay from a
guy up in Canada who had a supply. Several years ago. I think John got
it from the same guy.

The Poloarts has a fat booklet with it; I can't read the language
but I can see it includes cute Richter baby and kiddie pictures.
What is it that is inferior of the Poloarts to the JVC release?

May I please have the order number of the Sony remastered set, so that I

Hi,

Thanks a lot. I just successfully ordered the 2 Books' CDs from Amazon.
The Presto company called my credit card invalid, even though it is
certainly valid.

Thanks also to the friend who posted the Presto company. It is a
pleasure to be involved with such nice people.

The thing that confused me was having a Sony remastered set on the
Eurodisc label, inasmuch as there is an older set on that label.
I look forward to hearing the new set.

Thanks again.

Just to be sure, does any one know for sure if these Sony releases

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002K8BJS2/

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002K8BJSC

have the same recordings as these Olympia releases?

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004FLW37S

The discography on post #6 of this thread shows the Olympia being
derived from the "Salzburg and Vienna, 1970 - 1973" set.
And from CD the covers, the Sony links above look to be from the
Eurodisc/Melodiya LPs of that set.

They're going to be the same, but in better sound. A) Olympia Russian
material is always Melodiya. B) Eurodisc/Melodiya/RCA/Sony complete WTC
-- all are the said Salzburg/Vienna. C) The only other complete WTC is
the suppressed Innsbruck recently out on PoloArts.

I am tempted to buy Richter's 1970-73 recordings of the WTC and have two questions:

1) There was another release by Alto in 2014. Here is a link to it on Amazon:

Does anyone know how this compares to the two 2009 Sony/Eurodisc remasters which have been the recommended releases so far in this thread?

2) I've read that Richter himself wasn't entirely happy with his Salzburg Book II recording, claiming it was "riddled with mistakes". (http://www.sa-cd.net/showthread/91553/91580) Is this true, or just an exaggeration? I don't have a high tolerance for wrong notes, so if there are quite a number I may pass on this recording.
