Which do you prefer? (the following is from Haggin's "New Listener's
Companion...(1971):

- ...the Philadelphia Orchestra's tonal sumptuousness and splendor,
the Boston Symphony's refinement and subtlety of orchestral color, the
New York Philharmonic's radiance, transparency and sharpness of
definition.

Which is precisely why I happen to think of the NYPO as the orchestra
better attuned to playing Mahler's works, and slightly similar to the
LPO, as used in the Tennsdtedt Mahler box.

Even if the descriptions were accurate, I wouldn't think of the NYPO
as more suited to Mahler than, say, the BSO or Philadelphia. It
depends more on the conductor. For your Mahler you want "all of the
above" qualities.

I prefer not to pay attention to ill-conceived descriptions, like
Haggin's.

Even if these distinction were true, do you really think that tonal
sumptuousness or transparency are not a function of refinement? That
transparency is not a function of color? That radiance and splendor
are unrelated?

All three of these orchestra deliver--need!--all of the qualities
named.

Why stop at "almost every other?"

OK. To misquote Mary McCarthy, every word except "a" and "the."

It's all pompous bullshit.

Do ever listen to music?

Or do you confine yourself to reading superannuated music criticism?
