Naxos has been extensively (and intensively) discussed here. What about
recommendable recordings on its big brother label, Marco Polo ? In
particular, does anyone know the Villa Lobos quartets by the Danubus ? And
what about Miaskowsky and other Russian composers ?
So, what are your favorite MPs ?
Thanks in advance
Henry
PS my credit card will hate you for that, but who cares ?

The Villa Lobos quartets are great, better than the other set I thinkSo are
many of the Spohr, most of the French and Flemish repertoire, Film Music and
the British Light Music deserves a knighthood I refuse to become Ambassador
to Marco Polo. how can you have an Ambassador to an Ambassador?

Formerly part of Marco Polo, but now its own imprint, there is a lot of good
stuff on the Danish label, Dacapo:

Vagn Holmboe - Chamber Concertos (4 single discs)
Vagn Holmboe - String Quartets (7 single discs)
S. Hvidtfelt Nielsen - Into the Black (for various chamber ensembles)
Bent Sorensen - Violin Concerto "Sterbende Garten"
Per Norgard - Luna; Symphony No. 3; Twilight
Per Norgard - Siddharta opera (1 double CD)
Per Norgard - Works for Choir
Poul Ruders - Violin Concerto No. 2; "Dramaphonia" for piano and chamber
group
etc., etc., etc...

He's called an "assistant", "deputy" or "flunky" depending on how
charitible you are feeling that day.

He does all the work while the Ambassador goes to parties.

passable, 7 and 10, 8 223113, 8, 8 223297, 12, 8 223302 Miaskovsky is a
problem. Some on the deleted Olympias sounded a little better. What we need

other companies do not record one.

Montsalvatge Symphonia etcModern Spanish composer 8 223753
Mosonyi Symphony 1 Piano Con, 8 223539 A number of Cds of piano music. Not
quite Liszt but very Hungarian just the same.

does get it as an introduction to the Moyzes symphonic cycle starting to be
issued by MP 1.and 2 8 225088 are nationalist but by 3 and 4 8 225089
wider influences, Sibelius Mahler etc are creeping in. I have not seen any

pretty good.
Newman Film Scores Beau Geste etc 8 223750
Nin-Culmell piano music"tonadas" very Spanish . 8 223534

investigation
Pizzetti Chamber music 8 223812, 8 223722 I got on with this pretty well
but not a priority
Ponce Piano Music 8 223609 A must Have disc

Poot Syms 3,5,7 8 223805 Sym 6 and orchestral music 8 223804 witty
Neoclassical I always have these two discs near
Quilter BLM A nice collection 8 223444
Rabaud Orchestral works. 8 223503 now this is about the same program just
reissued as part of a 3 CD EMI box set. I have both , the EMI original was
on LP.I think Segerstram on Marco Polo win, with a better recording and a
bit more life. What we need is the two symphonies.
Raff Symphonies and orchestral works. I must confess I enjoy Raff. Bruckner
he isnt and I can not see another cycle coming along. Maybe these will move
to Naxos.
Reinecke Symphony no 1 8 223117 this is a very interesting work of the
classical romantic school
Roger Ducasse Orchestral music 8 223501, 8 223641 Late romanticism shading
into impressionism. I love these two discs
Ropartz Choral Works 8 223766. When will we get a symphonic cycle?
Rosenthal Orchestral works neo classical. 8 223768
Rubinstein Ballet music Symphonies, Concertos. A mixed bag I would go for
the last three piano concertos ,violin con , last three symphonies,Ballet
music and "Demon" opera Here there is more originality and Russian
influence.
Salter, more music for Universal Horror Films 8 223477, 8 223747
Sauguet sym 1 8 223463, 2 (2 CDS) 8 223464-5 These I found very satisfying
and surprisingly mainstream. I hoped for more and maybe some ballets but
guess the project ended with the death of Almeida MPs French expert.
Schillings Violin Concerto A real winner 8 223324
Schmidt Clarinet Quintets 8 223414, 8 223415 I can not say more than "Buy
Them" Symphony No 1. As good as the Chandos better than the others. 8 223119
also contains Notre Dame music.
Schmitt Symphony 2 etc 8 223689, Salome 8 223448. To my mind these are two
of the gems in the Marco Polo crown. wonderful expressive French music that
hints ahead of time to Stravinsky
The Salome is the full score using the original orchestration not a sort of
suite.
Scott Orchestral Works 8 223485 British music from outside the pastoral
tradition. I know of no other collection,
Sinding Piano Trios 8 223283
Sousa Orchesral Works.
Spohr Chamber music. better than thesymphoniesVery nice if in the right mood
Stankovytch Syms 1 2 and 4. who said the nationalist symphony was dead>/ 8
223792
Steiner King Kong film score 8 223763 Just the sound track for your holiday
videos
Lost patrol Virginia City etc 8 223870
Sternfeld Symphony # 1 another war symphony 8 223813
Stevens iano Con 8 23480
Stevenson Passacaglia on DSCH 8 223545
Johanna Strauss II What can one say> A massive undertaking Often individual
popular numbers better played on other discs but as a whole it is a great
gift to all Strauss lovers. I think it will be around in a hundred years.
Josef Strauss. To me this venture is more important than the JohannII one.
Josef strays from the formula, creates miniature tone poems.I think he was
the most gifted A new addition next month according to IRR.
Here ends the second list. I hope the third will wrap it up. Where I have
missed out works I mostly do not like them or the recording or have never
heard them to pass judgement.

Nothing to apologize for. And thousands thanks for your suggestions. Now all

Sullivan. there are four discs of his ballets and incidental music 8
223460,8 223461,8 223635, 8 223677. they are well done but I think you need
a taste for this music. Try the incidental music first.
Suppe. Well this series of overtures marches etc goes on. 8 223647, 8
223648,8 223683, 8 223730 plus later volumes. not a dud among them. It is a
lot of Suppe though. maybe light music collectors find equal enjoyment
from each.It certainly gives a fuller richer perspective of the composer.
Taneyev Alexander. Sym # 2 Suite # 2 8 223133. Not the well known composer
but his uncle. Though hated by the nationalists there is Russian influence
enough. A find/

Tomlinson BLM 8 223515, 8 223413, Tomlinson directs.Two of the best
Torch BLM 8 223443. An essential issue
Tournemire This was the set that might have been Wonderful post Franckian
symphonies. what we get is a mixed bag. Sometimes the works open out, at
others the orchestra seems to lack minimum directionAlmeida who ought to
have done a fine job was obviously seriously ill during the recordings and
died soon afterwards. The two worst performances are duplicated on an
imported disc, so it is possible to stitch almost a cycle together. we are
unlikely to get another and it is wonderful music, but it might have been
far better still/ 8 223476, 8 223478, 8 223808, 8 223877-8
Truscott Symphony 8 223674, chamber music 8 223727 British Music
Tveitt Piano Music Folk Tunes. 8 225055-6 If you like Grieg....?
Vasilenko Chinese Suite etc 8 223783 colourful but not as good as the piano
concerto I think.
Victory Three Irish Pictures from "Romantic Ireland" 8 223804 A lovely
disc
Villa Lobos Everyone has made remarks about this important set and its
future. Let us hope at least the quartets are completed.
Vitols. Orchestral works 8 223756
Wood BLM two discs 8 223605, 8 223402, Both good the second is maybe the
best
Ziehrer Waltzes and Polka 8 223814 and vol 2 More light music gems.
Lajtha. Symphonies. It seems this series has not sold well. yet they are
full of invention and popular material. The third member of the Bartok,
Kodaly trio of 20th Century composers this music deserves to be heard
Coates. Here there is a problem. The MP and ASV series overlap with gems on
both True BLM fans will want both but for one disc collection maybe ASV is
best.
Ivanovs. here again there is overlap with an Albany series. The MP seems to
be rather better recorded and concentrates on the symphonies
Joly Braga Santos. now 5 symphonies on three CDS. he last # 2 . 8 225216
has a good ballet as well.
Herbert on MP here. A great series. I loved the latest "Beloved Songs and
Classical Minitures" 8 225108.
I do not claim this list is comprehensive, maybe others will fill in the
gaps, I was aiming at a base list of works I know and are mostly things I
would buy again. Some have shortcomings like the Tournemire but we are not
likely to see another cycle.
I might have listed more had I been able to reach my high and low shelves
for discs and catalogues, it is still though a long list of often unique
recordings.
