Continuing with my series of early chamber music sets, here's the
first recording of Beethoven's Quartet No. 8 in E minor, Op. 59, No. 2
(the second "Rasumovsky" Quartet) as performed by a fine and
unaccountably neglected English group, the Virtuoso String Quartet
(Marjorie Hayward and Edwin Virgo, violins; Raymond Jeremy, viola;
Cedric Sharpe, cello). This was recorded for HMV in 1924, and
released as D 953 through D 956. Here are the recording details:
Cc4540-5 June 6 '24 D 953 First movement, pt. 1
Cc4614-6 June 18 '24 D 953 ditto, pt. 2
Cc4615-1 May 20 '24 D 954 Second movement, pt. 1
Cc4616-1 May 20 '24 D 954 ditto, pt. 2
Cc4617-2 May 20 '24 D 955 ditto, pt. 3
Cc4690-3 June 18 '24 D 955 Third movement
Cc4691-4 June 18 '24 D 956 Fourth movement, pt. 1
Cc4692-3 June 18, '24 D 956 ditto, pt. 2
The Virtuoso String Quartet made three other sets acoustically, all
first recordings - the Tchaikovsky Quartet in D, Op. 11, the Franck
Quartet in D, and the Frank Bridge Three Idylls. Electrically, they
made six more sets and a handful of singles - the sets including three
more Beethoven quartets, the Debussy and Ravel quartets, and the Ravel
Introduction and Allegro with John Cockerill, harpist.

Thanks Bryan, fantastic to have this. I have three of those Virtuoso Quartet
sets you mention - the acoustic Franck quartet, and electrical Debussy and
Beethoven No.12 in Eb Op.127 (with a filler side by Dittersdorf). I also
have a 1919 Zonophone double sider of Marjorie Hayward playing a couple of
solos. I'll have to get on with transferring them.
Damian
Hi Damian, glad you enjoyed this. I would really love to hear that
Franck quartet! I've got both those electrical sets too, plus the
Beethoven op. 18 no. 6, but will probably not get around to doing them
until I've finished going through all these acoustical sets. I do
have Hayward's abridged Kreutzer Sonata as well and will do that one
pretty soon.
Best wishes,
Bryan Bishop
