Suske Quartet's Beethoven at MDT

Since I already have a half dozen or so complete Beethoven string
quartet sets I'm not inclined to buy any more
(unless the Vegh is reissued) but this new packaging of the Suske
Quartet's complete set from Brilliant Classics http://tinyurl.com/ayredcz
is so reasonably priced I have to think again. I don't doubt it's
good, but is it exceptional?Who has it? What do you think of it?

I'd characterize it as workmanlike.

Couple of days ago I listened to their 127 and had to switch to another recording, if I wanted to keep on listening.

It's exceptional in its way but I think you can give it a pass. If
Brilliant issues their Mozart, however -- that you should grab. (A
bargain-basement issue of the Orford or Bartok Qtt Beethoven cycles
would also be something to have.)

Since you mention complete sets -- there are (as people always say) a
handful of transcendent one-off recordings here and there, such as the
Tatrai's Op 127 (never reissued), the Vlach's Op 131 on Supraphon, the
Janacek's Op 59/2, the Weller's Op 74. Those are better targets, I think.

he already owns. If they don't include the Tokyo/RCA, Talich, and/or
Endellion sets--all currently available at "bargain-basement" prices--I'd
go for one of those before the Suske set. Also the Yale Quartet's Late
Quartets, which flit in and out of print and can be had for under $8.
Steve would have to explain what he finds exceptional about the Suskes (I
have only their Middle and Late Quartets). I admire their elegance,
precision, and blend, but find them on the bland side.

Thinking about the superb Tatrai op. 127 gives me yet another opportunity
to lament the continuing unavailability of virtually all their great
recordings of just about anything but Haydn.

Prazak, '60's Juilliard, Talich, 1951-52 Budapest, stereo Budapest,
Alban Berg; plus incomplete Petersen, Alban Berg GROC live Late
Quartets, Smetana Late Quartets.
I have owned many more and let them go, occasionally because I didn't
like them but more often because of poor sound or the fact that I have
very limited space. Naturally, I now regret selling some of these,
especially the Vegh.
