He(George Szell) has an enormously wide repertory. He can conduct
anything. provided it is by Beethoven Brahms or Wagner. He tried
Debussy's La Mer once. It came out as Das merde

I've read the story before, except that the witticism was that 'La Mer'
came out of his baton as 'Das Meer'. Hardly anything to get exercised about.

I thought Szell was known as George Swell.

I've heard the RPO referred to Cleveland's current MD as Franz Worser-
Than-Most ( ? ).

Cleveland has been a very good fit for him.

I'm looking forward to him leading the New Year's Concert from Vienna
next week.

One of the best indicators of that was the fact that, after he became their
MD, the tedious chatter about "poaching" Esa-Pekka Salonen from Los Angeles
finally ground to a halt.

I find him variable in interest. Some of the best concerts I've heard him conduct in Cleveland included some fine Brahms concerto performances, Mahler 2, Shostakovich 5. But his Beethoven 9th was dull in the hall and worse in the live recording. His Wagner disc on DG has the orchestra playing in a very soft-edged style that muddies up the music quite bit. Szell did those pieces better.

No need to go all the way back to Szell - Maazel and Dohnanyi did
those pieces better as well.

The works they've recorded have been a bit odd.

I heard them perform an absolutely electrifying Shostakovich 7th which
they toured with for a while. If anything should have been released on
disc, it was that.

The Shosty 8 I heard years ago in Orchestra Hall, Chicago was
wonderful, though DSC probably didn't intend for his audience to smile
through the piece, which is what I did for much of it.
